I am running low on pellets. I just called a local store, and they have Somersets, only problem is they want 269.00 a ton! Here is a list of my other choices. What do you all think. Cheat River 218.00 Stove Chow & Presto Logs 219.00 Freedom Fuel, Hardwood Heat, Natures Own 229.00 Tractor Supply Brand of Lignetics 229.00 I am torn between, Somersets, and Stove Chow!
I just replied to you about pellets on another thread, but IMO, the best deals there are the Hardwood Heat (aka Hamers Hot Ones), The Chow, Presto Logs, and the TSC Ligs. I'm not familiar with the others, although I haven't heard much good about the Cheat River on the forum. As for the Somersets, the price is somewhat high, but you might want to "bite the bullet" and get 10 or so bags to have for the REAL cold nights.
Skip the Chit rivers I hate on them because I got a bad batch last year the 1st few bags were fine no issues ,but then the yuck batch so I just don't trust them. pic's before and after the burn.
Do you have to buy by the ton ?? If not split it up and get 10 of each Set's, Chow, Ptl's, hardwood heat,& lig's see what works best for you just my 2 cents
I'm partial to 'Sets but that is way too much money. In that case I don't think you can go wrong with Chow's, PTL's and Nature's Own (which I believe is FSU's) but try before you buy!
I agree the sets are way overpriced. I will never buy a ton without trying a few bags first. Per suggestions here, I am going to pick up a few bags of each and report back. You all rock, BEER is on me!
DO get 3-4 bags of the Sets, even though they are pretty pricey.....pretty much universal support on the forum that they are one of the best for heat output. Worked GREAT for me during the "polar vortex".
So, I see another member from the "other" place has joined....Welcome mithesaint. You still a member over "there"?
Who? Me? You must have me mistaken for someone with the exact same random screen name as me...yeah, that's it. I was kinda wondering where everyone had disappeared to, to be honest. Figured I missed something. I'm usually pretty oblivious to that kind of stuff. Anyway, I still post over "there" sometimes, but it's not the same without the old crew.
The old crew is what kept me coming to the forum, hence why I followed over here, we have the best gang of drunk wood burning guys anyone could ask for. Lol just joking!
Okay time for a update. Cleaned the stove top to bottom, and opened up the bag of presto logs. First thing I noticed, is damm these things are dusty. What I do notice is the pellets are a lot smaller then what I am used to. They seem to throw more heat then the Penwood pellets I have been burning. I will have to wait and see how much ash I get from this bag. Tomorrow I will post a side by side comparison of Penwood and presto logs. Bottom line, if anyone has Penwood, or Presto Logs near by, you will not be disappointed. Just wear a dust mask loading Presto logs in your stove lol!
I bought a few bags of Pennwood's to test last week and they are a lot longer pellet than a few years ago when I burned some. A bit ashier too but I like them. PTL's have been very good the past 2 seasons but I agree, they are dusty.
I cut the entire top sealed edge off of a pellet bag w/ a razor knife, grab the top & hold it closed. Then, put the bag carefully upside down into the bottom of the hopper.....grab the bottom seam & slowly pull bag straight up. Close lid quickly. Almost all the dust/fines will stay in the hopper.
