With this beautiful weather we are having in southern Ohio, my daughter and I went on a hike in the woods and she spotted a tree in the "back 40" that had this decent size burl on it. Never saw it before. I won't cut the tree up to see what's inside just yet... Although the thought crossed my mind. I talked myself into waiting. I'm pretty sure the tree is a black birch. I would like to see what's in the burl someday. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get.. I googled black birch burls and saw some pretty cool looking pieces that were cut or turned.
I did a subdivision a few years back that had a giant burl on one of the trees to be removed. The excavator operator and I took it down and he removed it to his work shop. This thing was 3 1/2 to 4' across. Wish I had taken pictures of it. He never did tell me if he found a buyer for it
Nice looking burls there. They can be a crap shoot as they can be hollow inside. But yes, the thought of what is inside makes it interesting.
Every burl I've found had been the result of insect damage and the interior wood was useless. But I tried and gave them to a retired buddy who turns bowls
Turned this cereal size bowl out of a small poplar burl a few years ago. It was a small 4" diameter tree with about an 8" burl. Brought the burl home about 6-7 years before I got around to turning it. Makes for a great dresser top pocket emptying dish
This one came off of a red maple - from one of the trees that was already down when I bought my house. The 4' walnut at my sister's had a huge burl on it as well - 2-3' diameter - that one's on a pallet in my dad's barn.
