Respecting woman is done thanks to my mom and wife.. hard at first because he doesn't respect his mom, but respect is earned..

oh and I got a physical disability (visible when walking) soo he understands that.. the non visible ones (schizophrenia for example) are harder to grasp is it a problem or excuse.

Especially when "experts " tell him his father's addiction is a disease. His answer is BS.. My mom (who he loved) had cancer that's a disease it killed her.. His father puts his wants first not a disease that's selfishness.. that's what he told counselor I brought him to at 11.. I agreed with him.

But I get your point rotti!

Problem with kids that called 5 different women mom before 2 when I got him, he sees thru it.. also makes him too old for his age sometimes..

TROGDOR makes burgers on a fire made without matches or lighter, made from wabbit or squirrel meat that he shot, cleaned ( with a knife he sharpened) and prepared.

Very good list and some very good additions. Can I add two more?
    1. Do at least one random act of kindness everyday and neither ask for or accept anything in return.
    2. Watch two movies Jeremiah Johnson and The Mountain Men

I've got 3 that might make the list, sounds like he may already know the first and foremost of a mancard, learn to read a tape! Not only to read it but to know decimals to fractions, to at least sixteenths, second learn how to fabricate and weld something, even something small like a steel table, weld it square and purrrrdy, third one a lot of kids have problems with (kids like his brother from the sounds of it) if your going to have fun, know your limits and keep it responsible, sounds like he knows enough to stay away from the drugs, but alcohol is always easy to get ahold of, and is offered at any party that he will inevitably go to as he gets older, my dad always told me when I was in my senior year (2008) to have fun but not to dare call him if I wound up in jail because my sorry arse was staying there and when I came home I'd be begging to go back! That kept me in line, kinda:rofl: :doh:
I've made a few mistakes along the way, luckily I never got caught and most importantly no-one else had to suffer because of my stupidity. Thank the Lord for that.

Man things happen fast here. I have not read through all 4 pages yet (as it would likely be page 8 by the time I got to respond ) so excuse me if this was already mentioned but take credit when credit is due but also take responsibility when you screw up.

There's been so many things brought up I don't remember if this was one but I agree%100 it's so easy to push off ones mistakes on to others, and happens way way to often

This is where it is all at. Be it a country or city person. Be a piano player or bar tender, farmer, or CEO.

Many great suggestions here. The underlying theme seems to be self sufficiency. Know how to do the things that will keep yourself and others alive. Know the difference of right from wrong. Learn to be humble. Know to respect those who deserve it. Curse (when appropriate). And finally one that took me a while...
"A man's got to know his limitations."

Great thread Canadian border VT ... it's pretty obvious your nephew has a much better chance going forward in life because of all of your time spent with him. His respect for you will guide him through his days... even the hormone brain daze... ;)

A lot of valuable insight here.. I knew you guys would.. Thank you

After reading post again, and knowing time and family constraints.. I think a entry level and advanced card will be necessary.. at 15 give him some basics a foundation to build on. In fact I could not weld a straight square and Purdy table..

my wife chipped in.. Honey I have seen you fight, fix cars, cut trees. have an idiot bounce a chainsaw off your knee 20 years ago put a pressure bandage on it and walk out of woods...

I knew you were my kind of man. when daughter was three, got car sick all over car. I carried her in got her in tub. started laundry wife took care of groceries then gave her a bath.. So I cleaned her car.

Teach him to negotiate a sale or purchase. Too many do not have this valuable skill and get robbed buying cars, homes, craigslist saws, etc

Teach him interest as it pertains to credit cards and home loans and how paying more than the minimum saves you azz loads of cash.

Buy a broken lawn mower and make him fix it. Then make him mow a yard with it of a senior citizen for free.

Get him a job. Make him buy half of this car....don't give it to him. Jmo.

bocefus78, yeah he will be earning it with labor.. I agree... you sweat for it you appreciate and respect it more.. Just me trying to teach him skills he will need to survive in this world at the same time.... last 2 summers on weekends and such we have cut split and stacked many cords.. He has been a helper for years.

younger learning to fix things he broke.. bikes go carts snowmobile. . I'm cheap.. Plus feeding this kid is a challenge.. He likes to work.. been trying to get him where he needs to be...

I think every man should know how to cook a complete meal over an open fire.

And cook the perfect steak on a grill, or at least cook burgers without squeezing them with the spatula!!!
