Ok.... You've got my curiosity peaked... Never had black locust. Here are a few pictures that I just took, if it helps. If not when I get home tonight I'll take a few more in daylight.
That's why I love this place, the learning never stops. I know that Locust has typically deep bark. But figured it was Burr Oak, cause I know that area has some big Oaks. Plus right across the street theres two big Shagbark Hickories that I noticed lastnight.
correct... I took it last Saturday, I thought it turned out nicely. The third one is far in the back ground. Its one of my Stihls.
Nice haul! I'm not sure I like it for locust. When its green, it does have contrasting sapwood like that. As it dries the color evens out and the sapwood sort of disappears. But the bark seems wrong and so does that twig. The heartwood looks too dark too - locust is kind of a greenish yellow, at least the ones that I have. Pics can be funny like that though. I'm not very good on oak IDs, but isn't burr oak a white?

That wood is Black Walnut. Thick furrowed bark, wide light sapwood, and the darkest heartwood of any common tree in eastern North America. The first set of pictures is distinctive. The second are harder to interpret. Were the second pictures taken with a flash? The wood looks different in the second set of pictures.
I picked up a 5-pak last summer and have three left. They were OK last year and am hoping time in the humi will improve them for this year.
A humidor always has a tendency to make them better. They get a chance to rest and relax in your environment. Usually I leave mind in 30 days before I even start enjoying them.
True that. I have had the habit of trying them as soon as I got them. Only a couple were ok and I can;t remember one that knocked me over that way. Stick them in the humi for a couple months, and wow!
I am cautiously calling that wood Locust. Bark is off a little from what I see, but the sapwood and rings sure look like it. How did it cut? The dead ones I cut always seem a bit "chattery".
Copy it to your computer. If you have Windows, just double click on the picture and it will bring up a separate window, then just scroll the mouse wheel to enlarge it. Otherwise, any picture program should allow you to enlarge it once you open it. You can even do it with Paint.
I was thinking walnut this morning too - now looking at the first set of pics and the twig again, I'm sure of it.
Woods also have distinctive odors that can be use to identify them. Wish I could get some free wood; I need a truck; can only get so much wood in the boot of the Buick and yes, I have hauled wood in the Buick.
