OK. 4:00 am Monday and its -2 degrees. Glad it got warm! The Hastings has been set on three since yesterday and its a nice 66 degrees upstairs. I'd like to crack a cold one and watch the flames, but I guess I'll go to work!

Was -15 when I left for work 1.5 hours ago. Last of the really cold mornings - I hope anyway.

That sounds like an excellent idea. Keeps you from having to guess and needless worrying (or early warning for if you should worry). Also will tell you how well those 2 minute cycles are working.

I agree.....I couldn't be confident the pipes had really gotten warm in that short a time.

Appreciate the feedback. I'm going to mess with it. I imagine I can just hold the return line and time it until it gets nice and warm. Then rest the thermguards

The way I determined the setting was to let the line get cold, and then turn the stat on manually. I timed the amount of time it took for the pipe temp to get to where I couldn't keep my hand on it, then added another 2 minutes. As for the # of times per day, I figured 6X day was plenty.
If you call Bear Mtn., the owner will actually help you determine the best settings......he's a nice guy. Or, just follow the settings directions they have on the website:

    "Setting the Duration

The best way to determine the duration is to turn up your thermostat and time how long it takes for hot to get through your zone. This can be done by going to the boiler room and timing how long it takes for the return line for the zone to get hot. CAUTION: THE PIPES CAN GET VERY HOT AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS BURNS IF TOUCHED. DO NOT TOUCH THE PIPES DIRECTLY. USE SOME KIND OF INSULATOR FOR YOUR HAND SUCH AS A POT HOLDER OR ATTACH A MEAT THERMOMETER TO THE PIPE. IN NO WAY DOES BEAR MOUNTAIN DESIGN SUGGEST HOLDING ON TO OR TOUCHING A HEATING PIPE. If it takes 3 minutes for the zone to get warm, add another two minutes to the time to allow the temperature to saturate the area around the pipe. If the weather becomes very cold additional minutes should be added.

    Setting the Interval

Each home and situation is different. The interval setting should be set according to your particular situation. For instance, if you have an exposed pipe running through an unheated attic, you may require a shorter interval than someone who is just lowering their thermostat temperature. If you will be staying in your home and don’t mind adjusting the settings from time-to-time depending on the weather conditions, you could set the interval to 3-4 hours. In colder weather, you would set the interval to a shorter period. The interval could range down to one hour on nights with temperatures of –30 and a strong wind.

If you are not going to be in the home to make adjustments, a more conservative approach would be to set the interval to 2 hours and determine the duration as above. This should accommodate most cold day situations."

Like to here that 500 deg. I can tell how hot that is.
The back of the hand temps are some times hard to read, on this end
    Thanks

I hear ya those are the temps I run when it dips below 20 . My highest reading from the laser gun was 550 from the glass and 370 top vents with LACRETE at 75 % feed rate where I backed her off . I think my protection circuits cut off at 600 .

The back of hands test works pretty good at 500*. You aren't able to count to 5.

It was about 0* here but not the - NEGATIVE junk like you all. What hacks me off is when it is colder here at times than up north. That chit just ain't right.

The 68 did get a full belly eating some pellets for awhile here. The temps have increased but still cold. Hopefully we'll see the 50's and 60's later this week like the professional news weather map bull chitters are talking about but I won't hold my breath.

Funny, one of the main weather donkeys around here is my sister's next door neighbor. I like giving him hell and I always complement the Revlon Mary K look on a dude. :picard: Quite the celebrity, I'll tell ya.... Egotistical big fish, small pond tool. The cat's meow here ladies. Too bad he is married. Sorry

I aim to please. Just gotta get the wife to buy into that one.

I do seriously give the guy some grief but not enough to make him cry. It is fun to give him reality checks. I should have recorded him a few 4th of July's ago drunk and about burning stuff down. TOOL is an understatement. Really, I am being generous with that label. I would have been more celebrity than him with a simple Youtube video of him starring himself with smoothie in hand. Clown!

I mess with him bad about missing forecasts and how he should get his nails done because it just ruins it for me not having a prettied up set of pointers to match the Clinique blush and eye shadow. Every great once in awhile he will have a semi-funny comeback and all I have to do is say whatever, drag queen and he starts fuming again. LOL!

Here the last year he gets into his house when he sees me coming down the road. Dead end cul-de-sac. It is hilarious. All in good fun, of course. Not sure why he gets uneasy about that..... I was hoping to become closer friends so I could really blast on him.

son wants me to make sure the baseboard heat runs some. It is our first year with it. I thought it had some automatic circulation. He's just a bit paranoid about it. Our pellet stove kept us toasty warm without much effort. Every room comfy. Nothing froze up. I don't know how it could as it is always about 80 in here. That p68 is one heck of a heater.

thanks for the tip, wherever it came from. my attic heat exchanger (hydro-air) is a worry now that the harman does the heavy lifting. this is a good easy answer to that problem
