It was -4 here with 15 mph winds when I reloaded at 6:30 am. Burning american elm and black cherry. Got a bit lazy this morning and slept in an extra half hour - just long enough for the furnace to turn on when the temp fell below 68 for the first time this winter. Since it came on I turned it up to 70 for a couple run cycles just to give the basement a little heat; quite thankful to have my forced air propane furnace as a secondary heat source . Just received my propane tank rental fee ($100) because I am not using the required minimum; explored ways to avoid it but no real options as I need to purchase 650 gal/yr and only purchased 242 last year (furnace, hot water, generator). Have too much gas in the tank to even get the minimum delivery amount so will wait to fill up this summer when hopefully the prices will be lower than they are currently.
I think we dodged a bullet. We are just under and below the 0 on the 50 and it was about minus 40 wind chill at daybreak. Just 20 or 30 miles north in the high country it likely did hit minus 50F this morning. It as comical to watch the dog 'hot footing it around the bird feeder' and barely staying out long enough to empty his bladder. I was out wandering around checking out all the neighbor's chimneys and doing my thing and he was waiting for me at the door. Smart dog I guess - well smarter than his owner anyway. Doubt he'll make it to the circus. lol
I think we have all been there at least once! 60 is not bad though...just about the temp where you start feeling like somethings not right.
minus 4 with 25 to 30 sustained NW winds lakes not frozen so couple inches of Lake effect.... loaded sugar maple stove ST is 650 and throwing heat... Wife said croc pot soup and chili weekend
Farmer down the road. His blueberries and cranberry bogs run behind my property. But he let's us treat it like our own as long as we respect it. All you can eat blueberries in the summer!
The regular temp this morning was minus eight, it then dropped to minus 18 with a stiff breeze. The basement was eighty this morning with the temps up here at 70, that was with the pellet & the wood stove going last night. The windchill temps have dropped even more from yesterdays forecast.
Today Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near -11. Wind chill values as low as -44. West wind 6 to 15 mph. Tonight Mostly cloudy, with a low around -26. Wind chill values as low as -43. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Sunday Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near -2. Wind chill values as low as -44. West wind 7 to 9 mph.
If thats all you use id buy two 100# cylinders and just swap them every few months then take other to be filled!
120 gallon tank quarter round I am purchasing in warm weather 350 installed then 3 propane companies will fill for .89 gallon with proof of ownership
I have thought about options like that, but am sitting tight at the moment. Last year they waived the fee if I bought at least 200 gallons when they called; this year they did not give me the option. I like having the 500 gallon tank since my backup generator runs off propane - we actually ran a week on the generator a couple years back so having that huge reserve is nice. I'm hoping that by filling the tank when the prices are at seasonal lows I can reduce the rental fee a bit by the savings in average price/gallon; of course if I owned the tank I could always do that. Looked into used 500 gallon tanks and they are still very expensive and the payoff would be too long. I used to use 1100-1200 gal/yr and now seem to be in the 200 gal/yr range so the rental fee is not too hard to swallow. As much as I love radiant wood heat, it is pretty awesome how much faster the furnace can bring up the home temps and on the really cold mornings like today it is nice to turn in on for a few cycles to raise the temps a few degrees that might require 4 hours with my wood stove.
