Oh, and my boiler and hot water heater both have install dates of 1985. I really need to look at replacing them before something decides to go kablooie - or more accurately - trickle, trickle, trickle, gush, gush, GUSH. Been there, done that, not looking for a repeat (at least I don't have a finished floor in this basement - yet).

i use a super insulated storage tank (55 gallons, i think) that runs off a third zone valve. i do not use the plumbing for the tank less in the boiler. works well.

Not even close-that is more of a space heater

This is what I currently have-an actual boiler system for baseboard heating and hot water.

Weil-Mclain 68 boiler with a Beckett oil burner. No chimney so it has a power vent that is inline with the venting and exhausts the gases kind of like a pellet stove does.

This is a new version, model WTGO but is almost identical to my current one

Power vents is another set of words for something to go clang, crunch, whine, fail in the night. Tell me how I know and this one was on a gas fired hot water boiler. There are direct vent units in all sizes and configurations. None of these require chimneys and I also belive you can get auto-light units that operate even when the power is out (at reduced capacity but at least you can stay warm). I do believe I once had two such units that handled the third floor at the old place but I may be mistaken. All I know is that when every one else was worried about losing their plumbing and being cold during the big ice in '98 we were warm and had showers and hot water.

Bear, I agree completely with the description of a power vent !!! That is why I am looking towards a direct vent system, I just have my fingers, toes and paws crossed that the current one hold up just a littlew bit longer for me. A boiler replacement isnt in the immediate future, but maybe summer time.

That reminds me-I need to check into any energy credits or monies that might be out there to help out with a high efficiency unit.

No chit. The few times I have pointed out bad service or meal quality I have received at least a free meal in return. Its only good business and gets you back in to try again...as long as it is not abused.

Although I havent done this at any fast food joints, only real restaurants that should know better.

Just got this today from local store. Honestly, I don't even want a coupon, it's just the point of it. Like I said before, I'm not even trying to be like that but this was a bit crazy.

One of my sons has a similar setup.

I'm in the market for a new boiler myself. I shut off and drained my current one a few years back. It was in this house when my parents bought it in 1971. I'm not sure what route I'm going to take yet but I'm leaning toward just a regular 85% or so efficient oil fired boiler.

When I drove to many towns for a living I knew all the convenience stores and fast food places in a 100 mile radius. The cleans ones, the dirty ones, the skimpy ones, and the generous ones. There were several in each city I visited. Yep, I used to eat alot of Taco bell, one location in a distant town was generous. Paid $0.10 for extra lettuce on my orders and they were generous on the other toppings too, loved that store and avoided the skimping stores.
