I decided to change the plugs in my 04 tacoma but the #2 plug won't come out. I broke the end of my extension clean off inside the socket, removed it went up to 1/2" drive and the plug came out but the threaded portion didn't. :(:(:(

Time to drill it out, I believe MasterMech has a good recommendation on helicoils.

Maybe a tap for reverse thread might grab it and pull it out. Start hitting it worth PB blaster now, I mean yesterday.

Probably best to pull the head at this point and take it to the machine shop. Expecally if it is a overhead cam engine.
Reverse thread anything won't work at this point. There's a reason the extension broke.

This is what I'm thinking, I don't want the debris from the easy out collecting in the cylinder.

    It will still come out.
as bob said, start with blaster. put the easy out in and tap tap tap with hammer. give it a left turn, tap tap tap, little more left turn, tap tap tap with hammer.

Just spit Ballin, is the plug fairly exposed, as in room to work or is it buried under the cover gasket? If the head is aluminum maybe you could weld in a bolt that fits through the plug body. The heat from welding might loosen things up. And remember PB Blaster. ....

I've tried a straight shank extractor already and nothing. Valve cover is off but the head has these spark plug sleeves in the way. Well this has sealed my fate.:(

Well, I removed the head and its at the machine shop. I still need to remove the front cover to replace the timing chain and followers etc. At this point it might be better to install another engine, this is/was way more work than I ever wanted to take on. I think I'll start a poll on if I can reassemble this motor mess. :) block1.jpg block2.jpg head1.jpg head2.jpg

I think you had more issues on that #2 cylinder than a spark plug.... while it's out have new valve guides/seals installed

That's not just a spark plug issue. Machine shop should fix you up. Got any pics of the gaskets? I agree with replacing the above...fix it right while it's apart.

Also have them check to make sure the head I'd flat, hard to tell but the spaces gasket ed areas between cyl. 1,2,3 look iffy. This has been a known issue with the bigger Toyota i-4 motors.

I have a 2002 Tacoma with the 2.7 4cyl. I remember the first time I changed plugs, they were tight. I've always put a dab of never seize on the threads for insurance.

Better yet, coppa-slip. Copper based antiseize for steel to steel.

the difference in color of the one cylinder compared to the others implies some other problem. how many miles on motor? any oil use? performance change recently?
