The damage is plastic parts and handles. Piston has very extremely light scoring, exhaust side, and I'm sure it will run fine for now since compression feels strong. Didn't put a gauge on it but hung it by the recoil for a few hours and it didn't drop.

All the damaged parts are on the way but I'd like to see some pics of modded mufflers to start. It looks pretty straight forward on where to cut but you can't beat experience.

Also, the 260 has a .325 rim sprocket and no bar and chain. The 250 also has a rim sprocket but it's 3/8 picco and I have an 18" bar. If I switch the rim sprockets around will everything match? Having some computer issues and trying not to log into Stihl.

I'm pretty sure the 260 and 250 use a completely different rim sprocket design. While you could run a 3/8 picco on the 260, the sprocket from the MS250 won't fit on the 260 and vice versa.

If you want to keep the same
3/8 lo pro again and bar just set up the rim or drum on the 260 to the smaller setup.

BUT the bar mont pattern is different o. The two so all that will swap would be chains. The bar mount on the 250 is the small mount or whatever stihl calls it and the 260 is the medium mount. The 260 is the same bar mount as like 440,460,660.

The 250 is the smaller version of bars like what's on the 210,170 etc...I think there is only one "small" stihl bar mount but not positive. I do know the 250 is not the same bar as a 260

    Thanks.

Email confirmations today on all the parts shipped and they should be here between Friday and Monday. I found 2 new 20" x .325 chains last night from the MS 290 I had so I may just buy a 20" bar for the 260 and start there.

Me personally just buy a bar for what the saw rim is.

You can get a forester bar in that size pretty cheap. Like $30 I think.

Parts started showing up already and 3 days early. That's a new one to me but it's starting to look like a saw again.

You need to rub some oil and dirt on that tank assembly so it matches!!!

Will do. I hope to be cutting with it early next week so things will start to match.

Actually both use the "mini" spline rims so the rims themselves are indeed interchangeable. You could run the P7 rim from the MS250 (confirm that it is indeed a P7?) on the 260 and then you'd need a 3/8's Picco bar in a 3003 mount which is do-able, just not a bar every dealer has in stock.

You would actually have a choice in rim sizes because I'm pretty sure Oregon offers drums for the 026/260 in standard small size as well.

Thanks B. I'm kinda leaning toward staying at .325 with the 260 since I have 2 new .325 chains that will fit a 20" bar. There's 2 places within 3 miles of here that stock saw parts so I'll shop around and see what I come up with.

The rim sprocket is a 7 pin.

Calling those a "big bore" is kind of a stretch as 44.7 is stock for the 260.

Any of those cylinders I've seen in that price range have been of very questionable quality. The casting surfaces were very rough, even in the ports. Bevels, gasket/case matching?  If you wanted to put a couple hours of time into one you might come up with something workable but even then you prob are better off with another, better quality aftermarket option.

And I would be very leery of the piston that comes with a $20 top-end kit.

I bought an 026 that has cheap top end kit on it. It runs just as good as my 024S with a Hyway M260 top end. I'm not sure how long the cheap top end will last. Both of these saws don't out cut my MS250 by much.

Dropping slowly is what I expect in a saw with good compression. Not dropping at all sounds like a problem.

Kinda figured you get what you pay for with engine parts.

The saw was so busted up before it would have been difficult to hold onto while pulling it over for a compression test. I'll do a test soon now that it has handles on it again.

You need -start the saw once a year ? this 20 dollars is good
You need- start the saw every day ? OEM or something near to oem

just try to find and use oem cir-clips if you use the china piston cylinder

Part of the problem with no-name parts is that they can't possibly establish a reputation, so you can't have any confidence in what you'll get. I'm sure some of them work for a while, but you're rolling dice and the odds are not good.

I've churned through a lot of project saws in the last few years. Only four have come to me with aftermarket top ends, and of those four, one had a cylinder plating failure that was no fault of the operator, one piston had shattered at the wrist pin, filling the crankcase with debris, and one had thrown a wring-locating pin, carving up the cylinder in the process. If I were just trying to get a saw running on the cheap, for my own use or as a loaner, then sure I might try one of those $20 jobs. But for a saw that I expect to sell fairly soon, that will affect my reputation? Not a chance.

Yea the suppliers and design changes fairly often on the china parts so what jon says is true...no idea if there ok and for how many hours?

Definitive Dave a member here sells china parts on ebay and can fill us in better if he were to drop in.

Just waiting for the sprocket cover to get here and need to pick up a bar. Haven't done a compression test yet but it runs strong. Might check compression when I mod the muffler and after I get the bar so I can tune the carb. 20160213_142123.jpg 20160213_142115.jpg
