Very common to put chainsaw bar in vise while sharpening.

I just do it on site (out in woods) and I guess thats why I do such a terrible job.

I would guess that I have 400 chains in addition to the ones on my saws and probably 10 or more rolls of chain In my basement. These boxes are all filled with loops.

Well, too further challenge my already damaged tool ego!! I too have more than one chain per saw. Having one more chain per saw is probably from my background in construction. Having multiple blades (in essence what a chain is) per saw is standard operating procedure and when we have some downtime we sharpen blades or take them to be sharpened. Our/my system is simple when a blade or chain is dull put blue tape on it. After sharpening no blue tape the blade or chain is sharp.
The reason I had more than one chain for my saws was I was lousy at hand sharpening and could never seem to get my chains sharp so I would have usually two or three for each saw and then I would take then in to get sharpened. Then after checking out this forum I read Firewood Bandits post on chain sharpening and I got the the Northern Tool chain saw sharpening machine for right around $100 since then I sharpen all my own chains and some now for other too. As a matter of fact, yesterday I sharpened up four chains that were blue taped and I am ready to go for spring cutting. I probably saved myself $30 for sharpening those 4 chains and I think I have sharpened enough chains for others to pay for the sharpening tool that I purchased.
We have used my chain saws to cut trees/branches on our jobsites. On jobsites time is money. So, a spare blade is a no brain-er.
So, with another members post I think I got things for chains just how I like it.

2 or 3 14" for CS3400, 5 20" and 1 24" for 2166, and a whole bunch of 18" loops for 350/550. Many of the 18s are "dirt duty" chains. I'm a compulsive sharpener and usually hand file them about halfway down during use. Then they go to a buddy's grinder for 2 bucks apiece and are relegated to muddy logs or fenceline stuff...or if someone is "helping" me cut. :picard:

I think there were 214 chains in this bulk buy I made, some were new.

I like to have quite a few chains here. I've been cutting a ton of brush and I'm always hitting rocks. I can only sharpen them so long before they become useless. I'm clearing off a a building lot that I bought several years ago. I have no plans of ever building on it, but I want it nice so I can sell it someday. (Or at least my estate can).

I have 8 loops for the 18" bars on the 257 and the 545, and 4 loops for the 338.

Right now, I have 2 new loops for the 260, and 3 total for the Husky. I'll try to get through the rest of the year-I'll buy 3 chains for each saw when I go to the Boonville logging show. I get Oregon chain there for between 11 and 13 dollars.
I also have old bars and worn out chains for each saw for any "dirty" cutting jobs I run into.

Yeah, NYS Woodsmen's show is the right name...we just call it Boonville. Try to make every year. Much to see and great buys-chains like I mentioned, Husky bar oil for $7.50 a gallon, and everything you can think for woodcutting and logging.

When I got my Poulan, back in 2008, it came with two chains. I finally put the second one on last summer, as the original was completely worn out. Now of course, after putting on the new replacement, the saw won't run (I think it's the fuel lines as the impulse line had fallen off). I have to get another chain for my 455 as I'm sure I will need a spare.
