Windy last night but the temps stayed mild in the upper 20's.
Breezy now and just broke 30.
Tomorrow will drop all day mon until tue and wed where we will be lucky to get to the singles above.
Penciled in a fire in the basement for tue....maybe mon!

Looking from the ground, it's not looking too bad, but I expect the flue to have some buildup. :headbang:
    No mesh.

My stove is very sliggish in temps above freezing with hardwoods, especially oak! It will take off fine with boxelder the very next load! I was baffled for a bit with the same issue you were describing until I tried the boxelder. Cleaned my flue squeaky clean 3 weeks ago and it is still doing it. It is really bad if there is heavy damp foggy conditions in the morning as well. It seems there is just no set it and forget it in the fluctuating temps of this winter!!

Is your chimney like 13 ft tall? My chimney is fine until in the 60s

Sounds like you could use a bit more height to your flue. If it's a pre-fab pipe setup, then it's easy. Not so much if it's a pure masonry flue.

Ok, so it's gotta be the wood.
I just did a cold start with a few small pieces of Maple and Oak, and it took right off. Burning well, even with the door shut, and it's 40 degrees out.

Papadave, Nice that it looks as if you don't need to worry about your chimney needing cleaning, because seems we have some very cold weather coming. Here, the call is for highs 20 degrees C below normal Feb temps, which would be about 38 degrees F below norms......it will be the only really cold weather of the winter. It has started the cool down tonight...strong N wind. Wish I had brought more wood in today, when my hands were warm. Will be trying to get a decent amount inside before Wednesday, when the real cold is first supposed to hit, although the winds are already over 30kph, which is cold with my exposure to the N winds bowling across the expanse of the lake. I guess the lake will freeze again.....it's hardly been closed this winter.

Some wet snow waiting for me out there.
I already hit the high temp for the day, 20. Temps will now start falling into the singles and lower for awhile.

33 at dinner time last nite,11pm and this morning.
I added not quite a facecord to the woodroom Saturday out of the heaphausen out back. Would have added more but I got tired of fighting the hardened snow/ice pack under the roof line. I'm resigned to filling the woodroom out of the attached shed the rest of the winter. Midas well ,,,that's the reason I built this place this way.
Forecast is for dropping temps starting tomorrow . Satudays high is 3 . Sundays , 9. Later in the week I may refill on wood and the coal buckets.

Friday and Sat. are forecast for -9 and -6 overnight.
Will probably (most likely) change by then, but I've already started bringing in some large rounds, and I'll be running the DV for a few overnights this week.
Trying to work in the stove room with a 500 degree stove a few feet away is......interesting. Warmish.:)

20 right now with a cold breeze blowing. I have Ash and a few pieces of Maple keeping the Woodgun at 185-ish.

we oxidized some more maple last night and through the day as the temp never got very high. heck, it even tried to snow today. nothing stuck as the ground temp was too high so it was like a cold rain. gonna burn some of the maple hoard that came from my childhood home( Mom and Dad's place) and follow up with a bag of pellets for good measure. it's not been bad at all this winter, but i am tired of it. too gray and lifeless looking outside, and dark way too early. now back to your local programming.

Wind picked up, temps continued to drop all day. Hit just below zero before dark (wind chill) and was a miserable day to be outside. Shoveled about 5" before leaving for work, shoveled about 8" after coming home form work. I'm thinking that maybe if I cut the work part of the day out, I won't have to shovel anymore!!! Worth a try, no?

27ยบ expected for the night, probably burn a little ash and sugar maple. Single digits coming late week, I say bring it, that's when the stoves really burn sweet. Got some cherry and ash cooking right now.
