22º out this morning, 72º in......getting ready to load up some black locust and sugar maple for the all day burn.
26 early this am. Dusting of snow overnite. Just kinda bumbling along this winter. Been a different pace being able to burn halfloads and not cramming every available crevice in the furnace full to get a 12+ hour burn. Nice not fighting to get equipment started every day in below zero also. Long day away from the house/shop so I gave the beast a full jag of oak/maple/coal and dampered down.
Woke up to -2 this morning, upstairs was still at 71! Still burning the same old same old. Temps headed for more winter like temps after this weekend where highs are above freezing again!
I have a very tame ruffed grouse that lives near my gate. On sunny days, such as today, it meets me about 250 feet from the gate, about ten feet off the side of the road. Artan, my wheaten terrier, goes crazy barking, wanting to play with the bird...tail wagging a mile a minute. The barking doesn't phase the bird a bit. It runs along beside us, often weaving back and forth just behind us across the road and into the woods on the other side. It will accompany us all the way to the gate, then back to where we originally met it. I had seen the grouse off and on all summer, but come fall it snuckered down near the gate. First real contact with it was when I went to cut a downed pine. It was about ten feet from the pine. I stood there with the chain saw, debating what to do. The bird just ate seeds a few feet from me and made little gobbly noises...wasn't at all spooked by me. I eventually reluctantly decided to fire up the cahin saw and cut the tree, figuring the grouse would leave. To the contrary, it came and sat on the stump next to me while I bucked the tree...... I've greatly enjoyed seeing the fellow all winter. Continues to be quite mild for us...just about freezing, brilliant sunshine today.
Interesting! Is there a little bit of red near the eyes? Spruce grouse then, if there is the red. Same thing happened here back in the 80's or 90's to my bro. The bird followed him around the yard and up and down the driveway and that sort of thing. At least until the local game poacher got it.
Had one of those hanging around in one area I cut. Funny thing was, I cut, fueled up, cut and fueled up before he let me know he was there. Sitting having a smoke break, and pup pup pup pupupupupup not 20 feet away. And he didn't leave either. Silly in the head I guess.
31 Getting towards the bottom of the pile in the wood room and I'm running into some less than ideal wood. Some really old beech and its lite as a feather . May have to refill the room early with some awesome oak.
Its 38 now. They had predicted a wintery mix monday or really tuesday mourning I think. Then they removed rain whatsoever and last last night it was back in forecast? Not sure what will happen but our high tuesday said 38F.
yea i feel your pain clemsonfor. i try to understand what they predict, but it seems they talk, talk, talk and change what they say all the time. this has been a fairly mild winter for me, not so much for others on here.
We have had a warmer than normal Oct -Dec. Then january first it was like the switch was thrown and went to a normal january. Then back to a warm first part of Feb. We kept hearing wetter and colder winter. Then through Dec it was warm. And they said warmer jan/feb. Then as we hit february it was going to be warmer than normal feb/march. So what they really meant was a barely colder than normal january this year???
About 30 this morning at 6am, so I left things as they were and went back to bed until 8. Still 70 in the house, but I loaded 3 medium sized splits of Oak and got us back to 72. I expect to be there for at least another hour or more. I'm either getting into some not quite gooder Oak, or the flue is getting a little gunked up (a lot of almost cold starts), as the fires are not as active as usual. Could be both, and with the addition of all this warmer weather, it's been a slight issue. Had last nights fire going real well, so I cut the air as I normally do, but when I looked at it a couple minutes later, there were no flames of any kind. Had to open the air, then the door for a few seconds, to get the fire back.
Forgot,...... we're due for several days of near or below zero overnights, then going back to not so cold. Spring is right there in front of us.
