One fire a day in those temps is pretty good. Must have a very well insulated house

One, really long, ongoing fire! We can keep the whole house around 70 degrees, which is nice.

As a general rule, no. Most of it is cut as "cookies"- thin slices. Much of the wood at this GTG is cut for shop heating the next winter, at 18". (Some of us Yankees fail to see the point of slicing logs thin.) Even the cookies are generally spoken for, for use as fuel by someone. You might figure with this sort of crowd, that the product/byproduct would be valued. Typically true also with the chips- animal bedding. No biggie to ask Steve in person. You can spot the shop easily by the "Green Witch" chainsaw sculpture by the hwy., just E of "The Ice Cream Man" shop on 29.

Wow! I had no idea that it got that cold in NM. Now I understand why you burn wood. When it gets in the single digits my stove is going full blast around the clock. Last year we had consecutive weeks where it didn't make it out of single digits. We have had an incredibly warm winter this year. It is 45• right right now and it was 55• yesterday.

Well, count your blessings with that weather. I was surprised that it is getting this cold, too, especially since we just moved from Las Vegas and haven't had a cold winter in three years. It is bringing me back to my Idaho roots!

I have seen equations that equate a thousand feet of elevation to so many miles north in terms of weather. When I lived in SoCal the coastal range there use to get several feet of snow every year including at Big Bear at under 7000 feet elevation. .

I went to Big Bear around 10 years ago. It was one of the craziest experiences of my life. My sister was living in San Diego and I went to visit her in the middle of February. It was 70• everyday full sunshine in SD. We went up to ski at Big Bear which was about 2 hours away. We got there at night it was around 30• and there was 6" of snow on the ground and snowing big wet flakes. Got up the next day and went skiing. It got hot!!!! We were skiing and it was 75• out. And man that sun was intense! I have never skied in shorts and I was sweating. The whole mountain is a terrain park and the kids up there are nuts! We skied and drank and skied and drank. I am lucky I didn't break my leg but I did have a sunburn for about a week. Anyway the temperature swing was crazy at Big Bear!
