I'd get myself a nice chunk of property in NE lower Michigan, the western UP or go whole hog and end up in the mountains of Montana. Don't need anything too fancy and don't like big cities. I'm a pretty simple person. I'd have to do something with the wood I'd drag around with the new tractor, so I'd May as well burn it. Ain't gonna happen because of the lottery though. Haven't bought a ticket in years.
What? Where do you get all that wood from. I have a tree service that brings me wood, but it's all unprocessed. That's the best part is cutting up the wood.
I have 10 cord cut, split, and delivered for $1,500. I did the math a few years ago after I did a season of cutting and splitting 10+ cord of wood myself. If I were to have 8 cord of logs delivered and I had to buck and split it myself, the cost to rent a splitter and the cost to buy a chainsaw (on going maintenance, fuel, chains) or rent a chainsaw it was only $200 less than having all the wood delivered already split and I get 10 cord instead of 8. Meanwhile I save 7-8 days of labor (1 day bucking, 3-4 days splitting, 3 days stacking).
How do you get 10 cord for $1,500? That's cheap. But, if you love the chore...I guess the money doesn't matter.
I would have some massive open hearth like you see in a stately home. 8 feet wide, 5 feet high with enormous logs burning wastefully with heat being sucked up the flue.
love your math. that would have lasted me two years on average. if i could pull it off, i would have a wood burner in that fireplace. but it is pre fab so not sure about how to make it work.
When you are buying large quantities at a time, the smaller suppliers are flexible with pricing. I also bought a bunch of dry pine off of him at $65-70 a cord this winter. I posted a few CraigsList want ads over the years. It took trying out four different suppliers before I found one that was reliable. Being someones biggest client works out well.
I would think the guy wouldn't even mess around for $150 a cord. It's a lot of work to process a cord of firewood. Doesn't leave much margin in it for him.
Of course I would! It's still awesome! Sheesh what a question! ( of course I would have to play the lotto first )
I would have lots of wooded acreage and a firewood processor capable of 1-3 cords an hour along with a skidsteer with a grapple / bucket and a dumptruck. I'd probably donate firewood and deliver it at that point. 2 cords at a time.
I have a client who gets together every year with a bunch of people to split / donate wood to the poorest community in IL...Richton Park. That's a nice thing to do. It's part of his church work.
I have posted a clist wanted add a few times in the past and it usually pans out for the better. The guys who come to me are the ones who need the money and will work with us on the price.
