image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg After much thought and reading tons of reviews I pulled the trigger on a new Stihl MS 362 with M-tronic. I wasen't really in the market for a new saw, but my cutting partner squashed his 044 a couple weeks ago and needed a new saw, so I sold him my MS 360 Pro, which has been a great saw for me and will be missed. He is 80 and the lighter weight and decomp valve works well for him. I will post up some pics in the future of the poor 044, which he gave to me as a project. Anyway, my first impressions of the saw are very good. I put one tank of gas through today and it ran like a champ. 4 pulls to get it started cold, settled down quickly and idled smooth. Revs came up quick and after a dozen cuts at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle it really started to settle in. The manual says up to 15 tanks for full break in, so I will reluctantly stay out of wide open throttle for a few more tanks. I put the saw down to pile rounds, so maybe 5 minutes of not running, then 1 easy pull to start.
A few changes from the 361 like captive bar nuts, master control and of course the M-tronic. On a side note it turned out to be a better looking saw than what the Stihl catalog shows. I am used to the split cover on my 441 and 660, but this one looks pretty good. I will keep everyone posted on the performance as I have a bit of cutting ahead of me.

That's what I thought to, but it's hard plastic molded to the body. Seems to reduce the size of the sprocket cover

    Beautiful saw!

Break it in right, though. You can do full throttle, just don't do it for more than 15 second at a time. The old way was to do that, then blip the throttle a few times. Now with m tronic, that probably doesn't need to be done.

That's how the newer efi 2 stroke sleds are. They specifically won't go all out on timing until a certain hour amount has been hit. Sleds will also add oil more at break in period via the electronic oil injection, but these are all premix saws.

In regards to new saw break-in.....

Do not be afraid of WOT. Just refrain from WOT with no-load. Stick it in the wood, hold it to the rug. Best break-in routine for a saw.

Remember, these little engines are all ball/needle-bearing these days. The only sliding contact is the piston/ring(s) on the cylinder wall. And the best thing for them is moderate-heavy load (NOT excessive lugging) and avoiding extremely high speeds. Plus, the newer M-Tronic and AutoTune saws do most of their adjusting only at WOT.

    To summarize:

Running the saw at WOT under moderate load will:

-Promote proper seating of the piston rings to the cylinder wall.
-Allow the electronic fuel delivery systems to adjust the tune appropriately.
-Put a stupid grin on your face as you enjoy the new saw. :saw::saw::saw:

Thanks to everybody for the engine break-in information. Since this is the last new saw I will most likely ever purchase, I want to make sure I do it right. I've attached some pictures of the 044. I would love to find the parts to get it back together for my cutting partner. He's 80 and going strong, but the sun is probably setting on this wood cutting days and this was the only saw that he ever owned. I've done the internet searches and come up empty except for the aftermarket stuff from Hong Kong. Any ideas would be appreciated. image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg

OEM parts are available, but new Stihl OEM stuff is pretty much dealer-only. Every once in awhile however, you can find what you need on eBay. Your best bet is to look for a parts saw or post a "wanted" ad here and other saw forums. The 044 is not a rare model and is well-liked. I'm sure someone has what you're after.
