I just signed up yesterday and I figured I would say hello and tell you a lil about me. I bought a house 4 years ago with a wood stove. The first winter I was ill prepared with less then a cord of seasoned wood. That lasted about a month and then I went the rest of the winter trying to burn green wet wood with little success. Firewood sellers were no help. They would show with wood that that was wetter then the stuff I dragged out of the woods last week. It was a winter of learning, it's a good thing I have a family with a wealth of knowledge close by. My father heats his whole house with a large wood stove in the basement since 1983. I should have paid attention all those days I spent stacking wood and loading the stove. My fil also is a wood hoarder and has used only wood heat for the last 7 years. I cut with both of them regularly. I find most of my wood from people that are giving it away, a tree guy that I friended and my fathers and fil property. I burn between 3-4 cords a years. I don't discriminate against any species, I love to mix them and that works best for me. Finding, cutting, and processing wood is one of the things I enjoy the most especially when I can do it with family. I have become obsessed with chainsaws and buy non runners off cl and enjoy dissecting them and making them rip. Currently I have a Mac top handle, husky 350, husky 346, dolmar 5100, Makita 6421 and Poulan 5200. Enough about me, I look forward to meeting everyone here, learning a bunch, using these cool icons:stacke: and contributing the knowledge I have when I can. Sorry about the book I got into that, I will leave you with some pics.
Mega pics galore! Way to open it up, Kyle Mulligan Glad you joined up and can't wait to read what ya got to share and say!
Welcome to fhc! Always nice to have another kyle around. Have you tried a fiskars splitting axe over that large red maul? Might just change your life if you split by hand like i do.
I have never tried a fiskars. I split with that true temper splitting axe and a wedge and sledge. I like it, works well but maybe I don't know what I'm missing. I split 2/3's by hand and borrow a splitter to finish up the tough stuff. I will get a hydraulic if I can get it for a steal but I don't mind for now.
Been there, done that! Now that I have 4 years supply or more, I don't have to worry about that anymore, same with you apparently! great pics and intro!
Same here except I use the chainsaw for the tough stuff. I enjoy splitting wood by hand and my son is just getting old enough to help. Good exercise and a great way to vent at the end of the day.
Thank you guys for the warm welcome. Ha it's tough to teach kids who already know everything! They love to help but usually do not learn until they get frustrated and start actually listening to what they are being told.
Yeah nothing wet has gone into my stove since that first winter. Some of it would only burn with the door open and not put off any heat. I am not to 4 years supply yet but if we keep having winters like this I am close.
I have that same red handled maul, and a Fiskars x27. The maul usually stays in the garage while I am out splitting with the x27.
Hi Kyle and welcome to FHC. Them two boys look like they can't wait to rap their hands around something with a motor and chain on it.
