We have a small house so we only save about $100 to $150 a month. It's definitely not a huge savings but there are so many other benefits to burning wood that even if I broke even I would still do it.
Well, at that rate, since we burn for close to 8 months, that's $8-1200. Huge is such a relative term.
I wish I burned for that long. That would mean more snow! I would say typically it's from October to April that I burn wood. Even at that, as it's been said on this site, my wood stacks are money in the bank!
As of today's oil prices I'm saving between 2k and 2500, and the house is 5-7 degrees warmer. Now I can justify the new 460 to the wife! Thanks Ray!!
Okey dokey, I just check the gas meter. Running the stove and the heater on it's lowest setting, we've used an extra 35 ccf for this billing period (we've got 2 more days, but I added a couple ccf...might be a bit higher), by using the heater only overnight for about 8 days. So, if we extrapolate a bit, for 30 days on the lowest setting 24 hours/day, we'd end up using between 350-400 ccf @ $.996/ccf. That's in this kind of weather. I would guesstimate that normally it would be closer to between 300-350 for the 3 coldest months. Since my cost is close to a buck/ccf, as goes the ccf, also goes the bill. I'm beginning to think my original cost saving estimates were on the low side. If I were to use the stove less, and set the heater on a higher setting to offset that, I don't even want to think of that bill. The heater is an older direct vent unit that is probably no more efficient than the stove. I normally don't use it, so save all that and spend about 200 or so for wood. HTH someone.
written 2007 oil was $2.49 then I just paid $3.44 today for 100 gallons I last bought 100 gallons 10 months ago. not too bad for heating hot water and the house during the day/when no one is home a new 87% efficient burner helped too Have made too many changes to know for sure but likely $1,200-$1,500/yr My sister and mom are feeding their ( much bigger) wood stoves from my stacks starting this last year and who knows for how long, so I really don't know how much wood I've used this year, beyond wtf. I haven't bought wood for almost 20 years , but I'm gonna have to do something to stay ahead as there's no way I have enough on 20 acres to keep 3 stoves going, especially where it is mostly pine here and young pine at that. Nor could I give up that many weekends.
Our average consumption of heating oil was about 900 gallons a year. Back 16 or so years ago we added a pellet stove. Oil back then was less than half the cost it is now. Last year we got rid of the pellet stove and went to a wood stove. With today's price of oil ($3.84 a gallon) it would come to about $3400 a year. With supplemental oil heating these past few days to keep the basement pipes from freezing I don't think I'll burn 20 gallons for heat for the season. It cost me a total of $475 for wood I had to buy this year to stay at least 2 years ahead. The rest is scrounged or gotten for free. So, you can see that I am saving well over $2500 a year by burning wood. Plus, we are warmer in the living space of our home. I see it as a big win.
Unfortunately for us, heating with wood is costing us a TON of money. You see, my wife has proven that heating with wood can lead to pregnancy. According to Health and Human Services, the average cost to raise a child is around $4000 per year. So heating with wood is going to end up costing me 12k per year and maybe more. Of course I'd much rather spend the money on the rugrats than give it to the oil man!!
Something to that Stuckinthemuck. Hence my sig line. that is in honor of my late Father in law. He always said I kept it so hot in here that the clothing was scarce. No little ones for us though, just more heat.
Yeah, but the work you have to put into gathering wood is smaller than it would be with a larger house. You save less, but you work less too.
You da man, BB! That's a great savings I know lots of people on here have easy access to wood lots, scrounge or other free wood. Some of us either have to supplement by buying, or don't have the time to C/S/S. It still goes to show how much can be saved with burning wood even if you have to buy the firewood.
Okay, seriously, what the hell is wrong with my typing lately. It instead of is. You instead of your. My instead of me. It's been happening a LOT. Stupid fingers appear to be having communication issues with my brain.
