Coldest I've seen here is 55 below actual. That night we had a hydraulic shovel snap a bucket clean off when the teeth touched the bank and a D9 snapped a track on level hound not pushing anything. We shut down the pit and kept the vehicles running. Made rounds all night checking on the guys running the equipment.

3 degrees in Southern Ohio. The stoves have served me well. The furnace has not kicked on once.

I might be saving on propane but my electric bill is a little higher. I have a small electric heater running near my furnace pipes to keep them from freezing. The furnace is mounted in the garage and with no demand on it the pipes sit full of water and might get too cold. I need to install one of those circulators that are used just for my situation.

Drolet Myraid on one end of the house and a Drolet Optima on the other. Heating 900 Sq Ft. Even burning pine when it is bitter cold and blowing wind, nice and toasty inside the house. We burn about 3 cord of pine & tamarack a year.

Only two times have I been in -50 or lower. I think -56 was the lowest and I remember being cold all day long even when I was right beside a heater. Had a truck. Put cardboard covering radiator. Kept truck running all day and heater on full blast. Still was cold driving. Don't want to experience that again...

A better experience was the first time I was in -30 or lower. I'm thinking it was -34 but don't remember for sure. All these cold temperatures was back in the 70's. But that morning of -34, the sun was shinning brightly with not a cloud in the sky. After I finally got the car started and headed toward town, suddenly I saw the brightest and prettiest rainbow I'd ever seen. I had to stop the car just to stare at it for a while. Like stated, not a cloud in the sky. Was beautiful. Air felt great when you first went outdoors. You were good for about 10 minutes then the cold seemed to really hit you hard.

1982 IIRC, the Chitcago area was -23*F actual air temps with -80 wind chill factor.

The cold temps have been hard on me. Not the actual temperature but telling the boys EVERY DAY to put on a coat and hat for school. I feel like I am in the movie "Groundhog Day."
Last winter I drove one of the boys to the bus stop in 32 degree weather with the windows rolled down because he said he didn't need a coat. His brother that wore his coat thought it was really funny.
The boys really have been a huge help this year. They take a weekly rotation on filling the wood boxes and topped off the garage wood pile before the cold snap hit. Their help really takes a load off of me.

Now that's sounds more like winter. Was minus 30 C last night at midnight and I think that's minus 20 something in F degrees. I went ice fishing and sat on the sled and jigged - lasted about an hour and a half and beat it for home,

Dangerous conditions that I remember well in the 70s
On the range in northern Mn with wind chills at 75 below, it's tough to go from the house to the car without heavy hat & coat. Ten to fifteen seconds outside with exposed skin is all one can take, unbearable on the face..

I hear you brother. I recall during the winter of '72 I was working as a Forester for a hardwood sawmill outfit in Port Loring and headed out at 5:30 am on the daily 65 mile commute to work and it was minus 54 degrees F on the radio in North Bay as I left. Was driving a Ford Maverick at the time without power steering. As I was going about 60 mph down hwy 11 and came to a long sweeping curve. It did not want to turn. The steering box and te rest of the steering was so stiff I had to really get on it to make the turn. Machines do not like 55 below zero. The old timers in the bush spoke of a winter during the 30's when it stayed below minus 60 for an entire week and the maple trees were sounding like rifles shots going off at night as they froze and split. I saw lot's and lot's of frost cracks healed over on quite a few hard maple when timber cruising. I guess that's why in my aging senility I opted for the Regency F5100. I learned my lesson - but barely soon enough. lol. My best before date may soon expire.

We fished last week with the cold front coming and the walleyes were literally jumping out of the hole into the bucket. Was not a fun walk back with the north wind hitting you.

Went for trout yesterday afternoon with wind out of the north. Sat on the sled and jigged but only last about an hour and a half. Had a whitefish most of the way up and - gonezo - So will try again tomorrow. Busy with Syrian Refugee Meeting today. Doubt they will want to ice fish. lol I'm going to build a super duper ice shack for next year. Big, light, warm and bright with a place to nap when out at night for walleye. Life is just so so good!
