1950s vintage Stihl 3' bar chainsaw 1950s vintage Stihl 3' bar chainsaw - $200 1950s vintage (I believe) Stihl chainsaw with a 3 foot bar. Made in West Germany (model #1106)and will need work to run since it has not been used in over 20 years. No longer have need for. Email to set up appointment.
I think that's a Contra Lightning. Missing the top cover. Stihl Contra-Lightning Mod. 1106 was made from 1959 to 1968. Contra-S Mod. 1106S 1964 - 1967. Contra-G and Contra-GS Mod. 1109/1109S 1964 - 1968. The first Contra's from 1959 had the metal top cover. They had a lot of changes for a better product. First it was sold as Contra in Europe and as Lightning in America. Later got the same name all over the world: Contra-Lightning
By looking at the pics, I believe it would be the more coveted "S" model which has a larger displacement. The cylinder shroud looks to be the cast one. Easy to recognize if you've ever seen the tin style one. Here's a pic of a Lightning I used to have showing the other type shroud (this was a standard Lightning). The Lightning is the North American version of the Contra. Same saw, same parts, different name. There are some variations as Deererainman mentioned. There's a whole slew of info in a particular thread on AnotherSite, which should be pretty easy to find. Here's the same saw from the above pic after I cleaned it up and got it running. Stihl ad...
Very cool indeed! They're big, heavy, loud and slow. It was surely an interesting project. SOMEONE BUY THAT SAW! $200 is well worth it!
Turns out today was a sad day for that saw in the CL add. I have it of good authority that it will soon be leaving it's longtime home in the beautiful state of Washington and heading to the corn belt... Elderthewelder's reward for posting the ad was to get peppered with PMs, driving to meet some stranger (in a dark alley I assume), messing around with the saw to get it ready removing the b&c and emptying all the fluids, etc., and then driving to the UPS store to get it shipped out. Poor fella. But hey, in unrelated news, did I mention I just got another cool saw for my collection? Can anyone guess what model it is??? Here's a hint; if anyone has a line on a Stihl Lightning/Contra muffler and top cover please let me know. In completely related news, just in case anyone here wasn't already aware of it, Elderthewelder is a top notch guy.
Good to hear NewToStihl! Parts can be a little tricky, but it'll be very rewarding when you have it all up and running!
Yeah, I don't really expect it to be easy to complete. I figure it'll probably sit for several years before I have it complete . . . if ever.
Was my pleasure to help out a stand up guy like Beau with this purchase. He is giving me way too much credit as the transaction went off without a hitch. Met the seller in a predetermined location down in the big city, we both arrived a bit early and made the deal. Brought the saw home removed the b/c drained a little bit of bar oil and took it to the UPS store literally 5 minutes from the house and had them pack and ship it..... easy peasy.,.. Oh and he did all the hard negotiating work over the phone on price with the seller prior to me meeting him for the saw, so the hard part was already done all i had to do was go pick it up
Modesty is an admirable quality, and this world could use a little more humble. Thank you for bringing up the average.
Beau is a stand up man in my book... I've done business with him in the past, and he ALWAYS does more than his end of the deal! Good on you Elderthewelder ! I'm sure NewToStihl will be happy with this saw!
I got the saw this evening. It made the trip without incident and is everything, if not more than I expected. Although the piston looks perfect from the exhaust side and only slightly streaked on the intake side, it's seized up which I believe is from years of sitting with the muffler off and the rings being a bit rusted. I pulled off the starter cover, carburetor, and other misc. bits for inspection and doused the top end with penetrating oil in hopes of breaking it free without damage in a day or two. I need to do some research to see if I can determine the bore size without having to wait out the cylinder removal. I can say that the cylinder is aesthetically distinctly different than that used on a later model Lightning (non-"S"), so I'm hoping that's a good sign that this on is the "S" model as eluded to by Evanrude above based on the cylinder cover being cast... A big THANK YOU again to Elderthewelder.
I have learned a bit more about this chainsaw. It does appear to be all original and is a very early Lightning or Contra (106cc, non-Super) Produced in either 1959 or early 1960 (i.e. first version and manufacturing years of the saw). It turns out the non-supers were produced with two cylinder covers; one formed tin and one cast. The super was only produced with a cast cylinder cover and it was different than the cast cylinder cover used on the non-super. I'm sure other needs will pop up, but as received it was only missing the muffler and top shroud. I have a muffler in hand and will have a shroud by the end of the week. Now I just need to finish disassembly, cleaning, and inspection...
