Is 'woods porting' the same as 'porting?' What does the word 'woods' mean there? I know, generally, what porting is, but does anyone care to describe the process and what is included? (I am aware that some chainsaw techs sell their services to port saws for people, wondering what it is that they do.)
Porting is a generic term. Woods port is a more mild version for work in the woods. There are some "hotter" ways to port a race saw.
"Porting" mainly refers to modifications to the openings (i.e. 'ports') in the cylinder and muffler through which gas, air and exhaust flow. They get enlarged, polished and re-positioned slightly with the intention of improving the saw's performance. As Lukem suggested, "woods" porting means the modifications are relatively conservative so as not to hurt the saw's practical usefulness.
Just Google "woods porting" and you will find more descriptions, pictures and videos than you can imagine.
Each builder has there own preference on what the definition of this is. When u woods port a saw. It basically means like said before it's not as hot. Basically built to run harder than stock but run as long if not longer than stock. And then it progresses to race saw mode from there.
