Stihl 064 piston/cylinder...should I go Magnum or big bore?

I tried a helical on the stripped out spark plug hole last week....and it failed. It's leaking compression around the helicoil. The small engine shop that installed it did a chitty job. But it was scored some anyway, so I figured I'd jist replace it. Now I'll ask you guys. There's no way I am buying an OEM P/C, this saw isn't a show queen...it's one of my workhorses...

I'm looking for opinions her3. Of course, I'll be getting a Nikasil plated cylinder and Caber rings are MUST, so who should I buy it from? I want one that FITS. I've bought aftermarket p/c's before that the bolt holes didn't line up with the case!!

Should I go big bore while I have it apart? Or magnum? Or stock?

    And go....

Are all the 064 not magnums? The newer 660 are all magnums.

I have heard many say the big bores dont run much different? But I d0nt know? And everyone here says go meteor or go home on AM.

So I am no help I know. :heidi::vulture::banana::popcorn:

Stock. What's your budget? Stock. A good used OEM piston for an 064 can be found while still keeping your extremities and first born. Stock.

Hypothetically speaking, have you considered selling the 064 to a lover of that model who will (um, I mean would) give it a good home?

Just in case you didn't pick up on my subtle hint there . . . I meant you could just sell it to me!!!!

Scotty, I'm gonna have to see some close-ups of the cylinder. There are a few guys that could tig up enough buildup o retap threads and get that plug done well. I do no like helicoils to begin with. Next time consider time-sert. Or a solid insert thread option. I just did one on a 461 and so far so good.
    How bad is the scoring?
Can we get WeldrDave involved. If he can get me started (tig work) I'd finish it for you.

Can you bolt a flat-top 066 cylinder onto an 064 and still get good fitment of the plastics and such?

I was wondering about an 066 cyl.

If the scoring is bad enough I think the weld/re-tap is a moot point.

You know you can always send me your broken stuff for a fix Scott. I've done a few cylinders with a Sav-a-thread (similar to TimeSert) insert. I might be able to TIG that old cylinder up if you decide it's worth saving.

I'm pretty sure the 064 will take an 066 top end, although I haven't done one like that so I don't know what, if any, massaging is involved. I've heard good things about the Mako 066 kit if you decide to go that route.

I believe you have to do some work to the 066 cylinder to get it to fit.

Perhaps not unlike an 044/046 hybrid?

I'd honestly like to stay under 100 bucks....lol. just bought an OEM handle/tank assembly that was like brand new, as well as the big airfilter mount.

I considered having the hole TIG'd, but was wondering if it can be done without disfiguring the cylinder. The scoring isn't too bad, it's got great compression.

I can get you some pics of the hole tomorrow. The cylinder is worth saving. How much are you thinking it would cost?

This saw actually has some sentimental meaning to me. I've cut some real monsters down with her....lol. I don't think I could part with it. But if I did, you've got dibbs..

Shaun Carr, don't know if he's a member here... goes by Scarr on AS. Also try Homelite410 . He's a pretty handy dude for stuff like this.

I sold a really nice used jug a while back for $100. Add a Meteor piston and the total top end would be about $150. I bought the KS jug for mine used for about $80... they do pop up from time to time if you look in the right place.
