New ones are overpriced for what they are. Used is the way to go if they are willing to deal on price. Not much to go wrong on them other than latches and hinges so used should fit the bill.
We ran "B-code" 4.3l half-tons as farm trucks for years. My dad beat the snot out of his '93 1500 W/T 5 spd. The body rusted off it, he got it hung up on the frame and trans mount more times than I care to count. By 90k miles, the truck was no longer road-worthy. It dropped me off at school a time or two and ran errands in town, hauled hay in the bed, pulled hay wagons, feed cows twice daily, checked fence lines, and yes, even hauled a little firewood until it literally rusted in half after over a decade of use that very few owners dish out to a heavy duty truck these days, let alone a V6 half-ton. They don't pull 10k lbs down the highway at 80MPH but you can throw your tools in the back, hook a small utility trailer to it and that dog WILL hunt. Enjoy that truck DaveGunter. Sounds like it's been taken care of and priced right. Brake/fuel lines and the bumpers are the common rust magnets on those. Add a set of coil-over shocks to the rear and I think you will like it just fine for hauling firewood too.
The little 6-banger that could. I think I drive her more than I drive my much nicer and newer Cummings 3500. Doesn't save much on gas compared to the 6.7 but when you drive 200+ miles a day, each mile on the odometer counts! Plus sliding around corners on canyon roads is a lot of fun! Wouldn't risk having that much fun in my big truck.
I always loved doing that in my V10. Its balanced quite well for a 6000+ pound truck. My diesel is way too nose heavy. Once it gets about 45 degrees its hard to keep it from coming the rest of the way around.
Here's the box I'm looking at, looks used pretty hard, guy wants $350, I offered $250, he said $325 is as low as he would go. This box is ~$600 new plus shipping.
That truck appears well maintained from a cosmetic standpoint and the dog box should serve your purposes as well, if any hinges look bad, its all riveted aluminum bits and pieces which can be oversized with a drill and re-riveted for a few bucks I'd be hesitant of putting a plow on it (unless you have two right hands) being a stick shift, it'll take some getting used to.
I was supposed to go check it out and pick it up this weekend. The guy left it in his truck and the truck is in the shop, so he didn't have access to it.
WTG Dave!! The hounds will love that, being all together. Bet you'll like being able to see them too. Congrats on your new truck. Have a blast...
Wife and I decided we needed another pickup truck, since we are down to one after I sold my old Dodge 4x4 to a friend. I have a 2003 Silverado 1/2 ton, V6 and when she spotted a 2002 1/2 ton, V6 online in a town about 40 miles away, we decided to go look at it. Glad we did. Doesn't burn or leak oil, everything works, new alternator-battery-waterpump-brakes 500 miles ago, good CarFax on it, new cat & Y pipe 40k miles back, good rubber, two new wheels/tires with it. $1400 cash got it. Now we won't have to use the wife's daily driver SUV when we need more towing or wood hauling capacity. Rusty back fenders, some hail dings... but, it's a work truck. Big crack in windshield, no big deal there. I know a guy. Really, for what I paid you're lucky to find anything that even runs, around here.
