I've been burning wood for nearly my entire life, and I've been around fires my whole life. These modern efficient stoves really are different in a good way from open fp's, pot belly stoves, and slammer inserts. Heck, I even did my eagle scout project about trees, identifying them with placards on posts for a nature walk.
Horkn, a nice change from the fireplace it would of been cold enough for the vacuum! Bearvine, too hot in Indiana??? I have had a fire for like 5 days or longer here in sc
8F here right now. Its nice it hasnt been bitter out. Same thing in the stove every night for the overnight burn, larch and birch. Im hoping Sunday will be not to cold as me and the fam are hitting the slopes for locals appreciation day. Free lift tickets for a family of four saves me $375!!
35 degree, and temps dropping. All Oak, last night I put a bruiser of a block in (as this morning when I woke up it was probably only 10-15 percent left in coal stage). I was curious on how a block of that size would work out.
Looks like the cold got colder. Sitting at 5 and that looks like the high until Monday. Sitting in the 75 temp inside tthinking to myself...bring it on!
14 at 5 am, down to 10 already and will keep dropping throughout the day. Was 72 inside when I woke up so I tossed in a larger split of white elm, 2 solid red oak, and 2 kinda punky oak splits. Headed off to swim lessons at 9 and picking up new 3D tv. See how the elm and punky oak hold up to sub 10 temps!
Horkn The temps forecast for this week aren't what they used to be. When I got out of the Army back in Jan.'71, I had told my wife it would be in the -20° range. Those kinds of temps were very typical for this area back then. Young people get all excited about temps going below zero. With all of the high tech clothes available today, cold weather shouldn't bother anyone much anymore.
The 60's were quite cold....the old timers were always commenting on how we were entering another ice age! (That and also how those damm Russians must be experimenting with "weather bombs"!)
It was global weather change, just like now. Of course in those cooler days they were worried about weather moving the other way due to smoke and similar particles in the atmosphere partially blocking sunlight. I remember as a kid some winter days where temperatures in the Montreal area were close to -40º. These days that would be considered record type temperatures.
Eh, I'm not that young. . I recall cold temps. This year is a cakewalk so far. It's just a cold snap that is much lower temps relative to what we've been having. I recall snowmobiling up north at the cottage in Tomahawk when it was -25 real temp. No wind chill. The sleds were actually making snow out of the exhaust pipes. That was a bout 18 years ago. About the time many millenials were born. Lol
You are right about this year not being what we usually expect. We will pay for it sometime down the road.
Oh yeah, sooner or later it'll hit. When it does I'll load the stove with hickory and beech. If I can swing it there will be some great deals on newer clean used 2 up sleds at the end of the season.
Last winter was very mild for us with a low snow pack. We paid for it with a hot, dry summer and lots of forest fires. Air was thick with smoke and hurt the eyes and lungs some days. There were stories of people getting into altercations with people pitching cancer sticks out the windows while driving. So yeah you may pay for it but hopefully youll get some good summer rains.
