Tulip poplar and silver maple..lol.. Tossed in some locust and hard maple the last few nights when it was under 20. Now back to the tulip..
Let us know how that works. IME, cherry doesn't hold a fire super long because it didn't coal well. A 7" round might allow it to do the trick though.
Horkn , you know your firewood. I had never tried a cherry only over night load before, so I just had to see what it could do. Ended up with a house temp of 69 and enough coals for a relight using a few pieces of kindling and small splits on the small coal pile. Probably should not expect much more out of cherry as it was 11 hours and it kept temps above the goal 68. Here is a picture of the coals raked forward.
12 Rinse & repeat - Oak,Maple,Coal Almost feels like I'm on vacation,,, not having to haul shoulder wood in !
Low 30s all morning but now we are starting to drop and the is wind picking up. Snowing most of the day...maybe 4" so far. Temps dropping all the way through Sunday. Single digit highs and double digits below zero. Brought in more apple, honeysuckle and mulberry to add to the ash and elm. Using a lot more wood this year than I expected.
I think we got real close to 40 today. 4 small Maple splits about 8am on full air, then 2 more large-ish Maple splits about 11am. Just now put in 4 more small splits with about 35 OAT.
The temp crash has started here in the midwest. We saw a high of 34 today and its headed on down. 26 right now and it will keep falling to 10 by noon tomorrow, and then -8 by sunrise Sunday morning. Temps will hold highs of single digits till Wednesday/Thursday. Lows in the -singles. Then lows will be singles above and below 0. All red oak from here till spring!!
I didn't load the stove this morning because it was supposed to be up close to 50, with a little sun came home to 73ยบ inside. Little bit of a crazy evening so I'm going to burn a little NG in the boiler. Tomorrow to be close to 50 again and 40's at night so I just may leave the stove cold until Sunday when the bottom drops out. Muzzle loader season starts tomorrow, have gun, will hunt.
Rain started a little while ago. Just above freezing. Loaded the stove with 8 Maple splits, since our low should be 32, and we don't need a ton of heat. We have snow and a week of cold weather coming our way. Fun times. Must be winter.
It's about that here. I let the stove go cold today during the day. Figured it was time to clean out some ashes after work. Cold, ha! After work I cleaned as many ashes as I could. There were a lot of hot coals even after not putting wood in it since last night. That was at least 18 hours before I cleaned it out. Burning beech and a little hickory tonight. This stove makes us all nice and cozy warm.
