Tonight I plan to start removing plaster and lathe around the living/dining room door way. This will be the first step in widening the doorway into an arch.

Waiting for a gooder result Grizz.
Plaster/lath is not fun. Last time I did that, it was expanded metal lath, and I dang near looked like a bear mauled me when I was done.

Pretty sure its all wood in this wall, terra cotta in the outside walls :hair:

I may possibly run into some trouble there, I am working near the original front of the house.

My folks remodeled their upstairs hallway when I was a teenager. We stashed all of the lathe board in the woodshed - made some great kindling.

Already got a bag of it, it's what we will be burning tonight. Letting the dust settle a little then I will got back at it-- got the trim off the door (that was a job!) and opened up the wall I was worried about. It was similar to what I thought--terra cotta in the way. Going to have to do things differently than I had wanted. Cut back the new drywall about 10 inches to accomidate new plan, taking a break while the dust settles and saw cools. Need to make the edge cuts next, then I can start ripping this open. Got one section with wiring in it, will have to open the backside first to make sure things are where I think they are. Project is going pretty well so far.

Did ya use something like this, Grizzly Adam?

I've done it for a lot cheaper using adjustable paint roller poles.... Works like a charm!

Just got cleaned up and got some supper in me.cwould you believe I did all that with my bear paws? You can see a little bit in the top left of the photo I couldn't reach, will get that tomorrow after we shovel the living room out. We are going to live with it for a little bit until tax time before we lumber.

I believe this is a load bearing wall so we will have to brace it good while we open it up.

Way to go Grizzly...especially just using your paws :)

From the picture it doesn't look like it was built with load bearing in mind, but I've seen weird things before when it comes to structures.

I see you've have knob and tube wiring. Are you going to replace that too?

    Yeah, what schlot said.
But make sure before tearing it up, or just go ahead and brace it up.
The "king" stud on the right got cut down to prince status, methinks. Not doin' much.

That wiring is only used for light switches and in the kitchen, I've replaced the rest of it through the house. The ceiling fan and light will be getting their own switches and I will tie into the power from the new outlets right there.

Kinda cool to see the knob and tube wiring hiding in that ole wall Adam. That mess on the floor looks familiar. It's a lotta work. You're doing good so far. At least most of the dusty stuff is behind you...
