WWW and I are talking about shutting off the internet satellite and landline in exchange for verizon compatible tablet (the only carrier out here). I am running $180 per month total for: satellite internet $90, landline $45, and cell phone $45.

    I would prefer a tablet with a LARGE screen....(currently on a 21" monitor LOL)

Can I talk on a phone call on a tablet? Or are tablets internet only? Will I need to keep my small smartphone for text and voice calls?

We have a cell phone amplifier for the the top of the chimney but it's still not a strong signal, wonder about emergency calls on a cell if the power was out (no amplifier repeater).

If I end up with a smaller smartphone, can I use USB for my current monitor and an external keypad?

    Thanks for any input!!

You can get WiFi only, or tablets that require a data plan. You can call from android tablets, even with no cell service.

Look at the large Nexus tablets, or the large Samsung ones. There's apple products too, but they are usually way overpriced compared to the android ones.

How much are you looking to sirens, and are you on with WiFi only, or do you need one with a cellular plan?

If you're looking at a tablet don't skimp:)
But since I do not have 3G or 4G tablet I can't advise you on that

for better or worse, we are in the boonies, only wifi is via my satellite internet dish @ $90 per month, which I am on now hoping to cancel.
So can I make a phone call to others on it, without cell service? I am such a dork, I thought data plans were for internet:picard:

Or are you saying I should still have 911 available? 911 is important to me....

    What are sirens?

I might be mistaken, but it sounds like she'd like to ditch the Satelite Internet (no more wifi) and go cellular with all.

If this is the case, get a decent smart phone amd use it as a "hot spot", basically turns your phone into a router. Calls from the phone, and if it's Verizon is probably 4G Internet from the phone too. If your running a desktop they make USB wifi plug in adapters so no wires are needed.

I use my Samsung note 4 as a hot spot to run my lap top for work, researching products, emails, quockbooks.... works well around here.

wildwest if you buy the phone etc. From Verizon aND it doesn't work or you don't like it there is a Short period where you can take it all back and pay nothing. I'd go to the nearest Verizon store, not a Verizon authorized dealer but a real store, and explain what you'd like to do.

There are ways to make calls on tablet but not the traditional way you think on a cell phone

Verizon was unaware of my hotspot, in the past but now it does not work, they want you to pay for your hot spot

It's the new rules.... you only have to pay to run the hot sporlt if you're on an unlimited data plan. If you pay for the data they don't care how you use it.

Hey bobdog2o02 and HDRock , do I need internet to run a hotspot? Back in the day (1990s) Tmobile required wifi for a hotspot. I am looking to go verizon cell service only, though I soooo behind the times and new technology...

No you don't need internet service, for a hotspot, but your cellular service will make you pay twice

Maybe paying for a Wi-Fi hotspot from your cellular provider, will be cost effective for you I don't know.
I have not researched it lately but there may be apps out there too obtain a Wi-Fi hotspot without paying your cellular service double

Hmmmm, this is an intriguing article! I already have a monitor....the bluetooth keyboards are within my budget, even more so if I will save $$ every month....

    How cool would this be?.
