They've also got everything else you never realized you needed. Even left handed metric weird fittings only used by one handed, one eyed nuns in Bosnia.

The SS scoop is pretty amazing to watch it turn orange. We keep a wire BBQ brush handy to clean the screen on it, it has a tendency to collect fly ash.
I highly recommend stainless pins to retain it in and have the closed end pointing towards the door so if you bump it with a split it does not come unpinned.

I think the small mesh was used to stop the ash from plugging the cat

I've been using finishing nails. My cat shield is a bit warped but if I bend the nails a bit with a couple pliers and then grab 'em with a small vise-grip, I can push 'em in a bit easier. Might have to get me some stainless pins...
Google "industrial suppliers" and several of the big houses will come up.
Yeah, too much ash on the screen, the ash glows when heat hits it, making it hard to tell if the cat is actually glowing.

Safe to say if the screen is glowing the cat is lit.
had the whole scoop glowing last night. There was a lot of oak coals in the fireview last night when I reloaded, it went nuclear in about 45 minutes.:bug:

Fwiw I've heard to not put metal other than stainless and mild steel in the stove, as in galv. Nails, paint (many colorants are metal based)..... heard if the metals vaporize they condense on the cat.

+1. I wouldn't put any zinc in, either, just to be safe.

Silcone gasket/vapors are a no no too for cats, at least in the automotive world.

+1 on pointing the pins with the opening away from the door. I've lost one so far and have replaced it with a stainless nail. I'll be ordering some new stainless pins.
