Me an old fart too! It's not a question of 'if the plug gets pulled' but when. History repeats itself.

I always hold out hope that the masses will get tired of being sold "the next big thing cause ya just gotta have it"... and go viral turning them off long enough to take a breath and get back to life. I know, I know... never gonna happen.

We went without a cell phone for a long time before one of our granddaughters freaked out and though Grandpa should not be out riding his bicycle without a cell phone. No matter that he did so for 50+ years.

Then, the cell service kept getting worse and worse to where I was carrying it but not able to use it. Certainly could get no reception with it at home. What good was it? I trashed it.

Then fast forward to the time when my wife was having some serious health problems. She was in critical condition in the hospital to the point where I knew I had to contact family. Problem! Where can one find a pay phone anymore? So I finally broke down and went into town to get a cell phone and have had it since even though it is used very little. Yes, it is a simple flip phone with a cheap camera that really gets no use. I can live with this.

I would like to see more young people being taught etiquette when using the phones. I have a 14 year old daughter who loves her phone more than air. I've taught her what I consider the right and wrongs when texting and have her put it down from time to time. I use a smart phone every day because of my line of work but we still leave the phones alone at meal times and certainly they stay off the table when we go out to a restaurant. We grounded her for a week and took away her iphone. That was an enlightening experience. Kids in school were getting mad at her because she wouldn't/couldn't return their texts. The young people are connected to those things in more ways than us older folks will ever imagine. I find that without one I wouldn't be able to fish during the work day, get fire wood, hike with the dog etc. Also the safety aspect is important as well. When Im cutting its always on my hip.

Those hover boards look kinda cool but Ill never get one. My son noticed a powered kids scooter on tv one day and asked if I would buy him one. I said not a chance! Your push scooter is way healthier.

Sad part of this mentality is that these younger people are now entering the work force/job place and bringing their phones with them and do no see anything wrong with it. Imagine how you feel going and doing your banking at a teller's window and seeing the teller's phone laying right there and have it go off on alert, then they pick it up to read, then finish your transaction! Feel pretty appreciated at that place of business now don't you?

And just think what happens when someone drives and texts! Or has to have that conversation that just couldn't wait on their cell phones. I wonder how many people have to be injured or killed because of their must have cell phones that they can't put down long enough to pay attention to other drivers on the road, or the world around them.

I actually dont see a lot of this. Ive been quite proud of my daughter lately since she got her first job. They have their phones off and away with the exception of breaks. Nice to see.

Around here its illegal to talk on your cell phone while driving although lots of people do it. You also have to watch that your not on your cell phone and get in an accident as insurance may not help you if they find out.

A good number of states have made it illegal to text and drive, but it is only a secondary offense. I guess they need to be busted for something else before they get fined for texting. What they should do is make it a primary offense for either chatting or texting while driving. If it's that important, pull off to the side of the road and do your chatting or texting.

When Ontario first enacted a hand free law, the fine for a first offense was $150.. I remember one night on the nightly news, that the Police in Ottawa, the national capital, had a blitz on to catch violators. The reporter was standing next to the LEO who had pulled over a guy flagrantly yapping on his cell. This guys says to the LEO, " How much is the ticket?" The Officer told him $150.. The guy told him, " Do you have any idea how much money I made on that call, go ahead give me the ticket.

Since then, Ontario revamped the hands-free law so that the fine can be up to $2000 and their are also 3 demerit points against your license. You would have thought that might have smartened people up, but alas, you still see a goodly number of the idiots yapping and texting their way do the road everyday. One of the big reasons, after 40 years of MC riding, we sold the Goldwing this year.

Those fines and demerit points should be doubled or better. Even then it would still amount to a slap on the wrist. If I had my way, every vehicle would be equipped with something so that if there was an active cell phone in the vehicle, that the vehicle would not be able to start, and if one was activated while the vehicle was moving, the engine would quit. Fines should start at $25,000 with an immediate loss of their drivers license. I would say a jail term of 6 months or better, but the jails are overcrowded as it is. Maybe have to work one year at an emergency room at one of the busiest hospitals in their area.

I know far too many people who have been injured, disabled, or killed due to some #$%*&^% who was using a cell phone to chat or text while driving.

all in all a very passionate thread with great views expressed by many. The take away that we can all agree with is this,,,, no to cell phone talking while driving and no to texting as well. Im leading by example with my family.
