    There was some discussion today as we enjoy our New Year Day feast on a Dewalt 40 volt battery chainsaw. Many were saying they were going to trade their saws for one. However, I had some doubts myself if these saws are more for yard duty than cutting down trees.

    What little I have read on them they are good for just a couple of cuts on a charge. If you want an electric for yard work I would use one with a cord. At least it will run until you run out of bar oil.

    I don't know about the DeWalt but I have used the Oregon cordless and I definitely would not want to be putting up firewood with one of those. Very, very slow for bucking 6"+. I could see where a cordless would make perfect sense for most homeowner yard clean-up applications however.

    Yes, I just kinda figured he could add some insight on battery models. I didn't realize the battery jobs were getting so "popular" to have a lot of makers.

    Another thing to consider is that chaps are not rated to protect against an electric saw iirc. Then again, most homeowners don't know what chaps are either...let alone wear them.

    But electrics have a one-up on most gas powered units. The chain stops immediately upon releasing the trigger. I wonder if the battery operated units have as much torque as a corded saw? I doubt it. Perhaps a standard set of chaps is adequate against a battery operated saw.

    Think about how a typical piston engine works, they do not deliver constant stream of power. Rather they produce power in short bursts which gets stored in they flywheel and released as load is applied. A relatively small amount of resistance applied at the right moment will stop it dead in its tracks. So you only need to overload the engine for a brief moment to expend the energy in the flywheel and stop the crankshaft. Gas units are also limited by the clutch, which will slip normally before the engine completely stalls.

    Electrics on the other hand, are ridiculously strong little buggers. What happens when you attempt to overload an electric? It keeps going until the mains current is interrupted, and if that doesn't happen real quick, that saw is still doing damage.

    Considering there is a label on my stihl chaps that specifically state they won't stop an electric saw, I chose not to. Send me an electric saw and your chaps, and I'll test it all you want.

    I dont have see any kind of this label in my stihl, husqvarna, pfanner, pants until now , maybe here in europe have diferent standards than in states

    I have a 40v ryobi it works really well and will cut decent sized stuff. I wouldn't trade my gas saw for one as a primary saw right now but wouldn't be surprised if they become comparable in run time and power in the future. I also have the ryobi weedeater that is as good as the gas one it replaced and the polesaw that goes on it kicks butt.
