Neighbor built a splitter , no wood heat but loves the out door fire pit fires Other neighbor did some tree clearing last couple years & has some birch & cottonwood in 4' lengths He's been getting a load in his atv every day or so. Went over to see his splitter Ram on a beam & a separate hyd pump & valve. Work well for his needs Can see water around the wedge on the semi punky birch oozing out of the wood Wet stuff, 2 years old & pretty punky, in 4' lengths bark on.
i wish there was an easy and quick way to Debark logs before piling them. They dry so very well and avoid this wet wood problem.
There's reason Native Americans used birch bark for canoes. It won't let water in, or out. Birch rounds go punky unless split at least in half. They'll keep pretty much indefinitely if at least split in half though. I ran across a yule log project in the cottage basement that was a 8 ft cut in half paper birch. The wood was solid, and from cub scouts. When I was a cub scout. So probably over 30 yrs old. It's faarwood now.
I left my meter at home. It would've read something though. My guess is high single digits. There's a theory here that if the wood is not dust, it will not be much below a certain percentage on the mm.
I would agree with you on that. Ive had some pine that wouldnt pick up a reading. Even if the meter doesnt show anything the reality is that there is still moisture in the wood. Also in my scenario most moisture meters need a calibration adjustment when it comes to wood like pine so even if Im reading 8% it might actually be closer to 13%.
My ryobi can be switched from pine, oak, and then a generic hardwood setting. I've monkeyed with it enough to know that there's a difference in readings between the settings when using the mm in the same piece without moving the prongs at all.
I didnt know you can get one with different settings. Ill have to look into that when my current one wears out. Thanks!
It is the ryobi phoneworx moisture meter. Home depot carries them. $30, uh ses Android or ios. They are sweet. You can take pictures of the wood, and it will record date and time, relative humidity, as well as the MC. You can label them and sort the pictures and readings.
