It sounds like there is way too much wrong to fix , I'd head to Lowe's or a local appliance guy and get a new one , less head aches , but that's just me .

You can get some great all weather tires for a Suburban, truck etc where you wont need snow tires for most areas. Cars, I am not so sure. My last car required snowtires for my 90 minute commute and driveway..but that was 18 years ago. AWD since then and no snows.

Hate to say it man, but I am with Will. If buying cheap, get a new one on sale at least it will have a warranty for a year.

UNLESS you find super cheap that still runs-but for how long. My honey bough a CL top loader about 5 years ago that is still running-sort of. But it lasted a while for short $$. Its a craps shoot. I would NOT buy a front loader or one with an electronic control from CL -too many things to go wrong $$ compared to a top loader with a good ole mechanical control.

Me, I run things into the ground till they dont work any longer then buy new or at least still under a warranty if used. She loves yard sales. To each his own.

We made out pretty good a couple years ago at Lowes. We bought a dryer from the 'scratch and dent' section and got the matching washer. When they delivered it, they managed to put a dent in the side of the washer when taking it off the truck. They offered to bring another unit or give us 10% off. I took the 10%. Nobody looks at the side of the washer in the basement.

I had a GE top loader at the shack up north that came with the place. The transmission died and it was a $225 part. Not worth it for a 1994 washer. Home Depot had a special on an Amana top loader for $299. I scooped that one up and it's not bad for the price.

The stuff around here on CL was either in the same shape as the one I had (cheap and needing repairs) or not enough less $$$ than a new unit to make it worth the gamble.

Yeah, teresa got lucky in my opinion on her CL top loader. If you buy from Lowes scratch and dent or repaired, get the replacement warranty. She bought a repaired dishwasher last year that chit the bed after about a year. They refunded her money after 2 months of service center giving the runaround on repairing the unit through the Lowes warranty.

Our first year without any 4WD was 2013/2014, which was the snowiest winter here since the 1950s. I think we had around 140" of snow that winter. I had just got the Cruze and my wife had her Prius. I broke down in February of that year and replaced my old 2WD 85 S-10 with a 4WD 2005 Silverado. Much nicer having a full size truck that the whole family can ride in when needed. The truck has a set of Cooper all season tires and I've never had a problem with traction.

I ran all season tires on every car I had before the Cruze. The winter tires make a huge difference, especially here in one of the MI lake effect snow belts where we can go from sunny to white out in 2 miles.

Yep, we got the warranty on both the washer and dryer. Way too many doo-dads and chit to break on the new units. So far, no problems, which is usually the case any time I buy any type of extended warranty.

Me too Will & G.

At $250 + of parts and tools needed to properly rehab, and without knowing if the transmission will be good or bad once parts are replaced, time for a new Washer.

I spoke w/ the local appliance store parts guy, explained what I found, he concurred w/ not worth trying to rehab it. I asked if there were any New Year's specials going on, was vague on the answer.. But I can understand that, they are a small shop / don't have the volume of the big stores, wasn't expecting to get a 'steal', in any case.

I'm hearing everyone loud-and-clear on the CL used route - I really don't want to be buying someone else's headache.. The broken washer here is giving me enough grief, thank you very much.

Checking that out now on Homey D's website, thanks for the heads-up and +1 on Amana, much appreciated.

That's the plan G - a basic top-loader, with mechanicals - don't want to spoil the 'Boss' here..

Quick note on extended warranties at Lowes. If buying more than one appliance at the same time, get the warranty for at least 1 less unit. The warranty does not specify the item, its for any applicable item on the receipt and its when you use it that it attaches to a specific item. Chances are you wont need it for all, if any.

I agree. IMO, take a trip to HD and Lowes. They have their "Scratch & Dent" units that are great values if you find something that's close to what you want. I bought a electric range for the "new" shack last year....listed for about $700, had a dented rear panel. I told the manager I'd take it out myself, and ended-up getting a basically new unit for $325.00. Took it home, removed the rear panel.....10 minutes later a BFH made all the rough spots nice & smooth again.....couldn't tell from a new one.
It DOES pay to haggle over these units.

I'm sorry to hear that. Too many big ticket items on the repair list for me. Replacing the machine seems to be the best option. Good luck shopping. Hard to figure out just what is your best option. The front end loaders spin much faster and use way less water. so your clothes dry faster. But they have there issues fixing them and they cost a lot. The top loader now come with out the center agitator. They use way less water. I don't know if I mentioned this or not, but we contribute to the odor and shorter life of a machine by using too much detergent. Two tablespoons full is adequate, for any of them. My wife wouldn't cut back so I switched over to Tide Pods.
