So much for thinking I had my 'Service 4WD' issue taken care of. It decided to show up again, and it's back to its trick of staying in 4WD or 2WD depending on its mood.

I broke down and called the local dealer. Small town dealer, good service and fair prices. I have an open recall that I've been ignoring for the rear brakes that they need to look at anyways. I wouldn't guess there would be a recall notice for a 10 year old vehicle with 157K on the clock, but if they want to potentially replace my rear brake shoes for free, so be it. They said they can run the scan tool on it while it's there and see what the problem is. Based on what I've read, it could either be the wiring harness to the transfer case or a sensor in the transfer case motor/encoder motor. I'd rather have their tech confirm the problem before I throw a $250 part at a problem. It's going in next Monday.

    Time for beer now.

The little Smart has a very impressive crash rating thats better than many big rigs.

I was a commercial driver for years and understand what can and can't be seen from the cab of a big rig.

I stay away from therm suckers with "Widdle car"

We don't take the Smart out in the Snow, not even.

    The Smart grows on ya.
We love it a lot, ya just gotta drive on top of things is all and watch traffic.

The crew cabin will survive some nasty crashes and has a buttload of air bags (Not those that throw shrapnel either )

I just hate feeding the big hog all the time.

30 plus mpg around town is waaaaaay better than even our mini van at 13 mpg.

The Burb gets 14 max hwy and 10 in town.

Starting up that big 454 just to move it around the yard will likely feed the Smart to town and back :D

Although I have seen the commercial where it holds up alot of weight to prove its strength-so will corrugated cardboard. Having been in a t-bone, roll rover myself that crushed part of my hand many years ago and that was in good weather during the summer time-someone blew a stop sign, I just cannot imagine that little hamster ball being a match for anything of size.

Hell. I ride a M/C so who am I to say anything

I barely use my smart azz phone for anything more than a................wait for it...................phone. Not a fan of the tablet either, you lose half the screen to pull up the virtual keyboard. If I were t get a tablet like device it would be more on the line of a Surface-but those at spendy $$

Yeah, even the '00 Camry here feels "small" sometimes on the road vs. vehicles built today, always favor traveling on back roads vs. Interstate for this reason.

we got our (2000) outback used at a smart car dealership west of portland.
the couple who had leased it got a smart car.
they sure treated the outback well.
it only had 86k miles on it in september of '09.

now it has about 105k. and that includes driving it from coast to coast when we moved east.

I was just talking w/ my daughter about this yesterday, using a new Kindle Fire HD as a tablet with Bluetooth keyboard, as Amazon Student Prime rents textbooks at a considerable discount vs. printed college books - the cost savings (vs. books) more than justifies the cost of the Kindle.. She is still crunching the numbers to make sure that's what she wants to do. ( I can't blame her, lifting her backpack full of books last semester was about as heavy as a bag of pellets, Eesh. )

Tip on college books-buy used, you can save a bundle sometimes. My honey did that for nursing school on websites that re-sell books. Many times they give you the minor differences made from year to year.
