... Like I tell my buddy that tries to give me the speech on the ballistics... A .380 is better in your pocket than a .45 is left at home... I like my nine for its ability to be concealed, it's the PPS. I've never had a XD but heard some good things about them, they do look good. If you get one, ......
Seen a lot of them. Many experts are also in the 9mm camp. Quicker follow up shots, more ammo on board, less expensive to shot = more trigger time. As I said before the debate will rage long after my last round is spent. By the way, 5.56, or 7.62?
Respectfully, your .380 comment is right except a .380 is only similar to 9mm in diameter. .380 and .45 both share the ACP. Similar proportions. The. 380 just leaves less cavitiy and less ballistic shock. The problem with 9mm is that it you might kill your assailant and your neighbors wife. 9mm Parabellum is STUPID FAST round for defense. It simply cant slow down enough in a human body to not be lethal on the other side.
9mm is great for practice and training for all of the reasons above; less perceived recoil, faster followup, cheaper to shoot..... still doesnt change why Local LEO agencies are migrating to .40S&W to reduce collateral damage. Hell even .357 Sig is better than 9mm for my argument sake.
My XD 45 has been a great gun. I have looked at the slim but for now I am very happy with my Springfield. Pick whichever caliber your comfortable with. I feel the 9mm snaps too much and the 45 is a slow push back. I just prefer the 45 feel. I do know two guys that bought the XDS and are very happy with it.
Just a few well known names and their pistol caliber of choice. Travis HaleyGlock 17 9mm (also 9mm M&P) Massad AyoobGlock 9mm (.357 Sig & .45) Chris CostaS&W M&P 9mm Larry VickersGlock 17/19 9mm Gabe SuarezGlock 17 9mm Rob Pincus9mm (recommends a variety of handguns in this caliber). With that I'll leave it at, let's agree to disagree.
Ok, like your post and I'm not trying to be "D". How about something in ball rounds? And JHP+P? Let's get really stupid, how about a hot ball round?
This is my point, a 9 worry stagnated non+P JHP is ok, any hot 9mm in my mind is dangerous aswell as a standard ball round. I'm only arguing because I like to learn and have a decent accumulation of knowledge.
Most pd went to something larger after that huge cluster duck shootout in miami in the 80s. Originally it was a 10mm they tried. Then they realized most officers couldn't shoot a round like that as accurate. Then the 10mm light was born....aka .40sw. The rest is history. Now I see more pd trading in the 40 for 9 for the same reasons plus the advancement of projectiles in the 9mm has changed a metric crap ton since Miami. Now, back to discussing Springfields lol.
I like the XD, but I do have 2 gripes. First, it's single action striker fired, so it's like carrying a 1911 "cocked and locked" with the safety off (Condition 0). With a Glock and S&W M&P the striker get's pulled back some by the trigger, but with the XD the striker is fully pulled back after each shot and ready to go. I think a thumb safety is available on some models, but it's not common. Second, it's a just a "cheaper" gun designed and made in Croatia and licensed by Springfield and sold at an upcharge. I know this has nothing to do with it's reliability, but it bothers me for some reason. I'd rather support a company that did it's own engineering, regardless of country of origin.
Don't forget the 2 safeties in place, grip and trigger. It would take an act of god for the gun to discharge without a human hand gripping and squeezing the trigger
Still, a lot of people are uncomfortable carrying a single action gun like the 1911, which also has a grip safety, in condition 1, but at least it has a thumb safety. And nobody advocates carrying a 1911 in condition 0, which is essentially what the XD is with a round chambered. The only difference is you can see the hammer on a 1911, while the striker is hidden on the XD which I guess makes people feel more comfortable with it.
I have carried a 1911 cocked and locked..... retention strap on holster goes between the hammer and firing pin just in case. I want comfortable with that though. The trigger safety on the XD makes the difference for me.
Well I picked up a couple glocks and put them all right back down. I'm sure they are good guns but I wasn't feeling it. I still like the xds the best.
