Woodstock progressive or ideal steel

we are building a basement space that will be a open room, we want a wood stove so we have been building a super vent chimney in the home through two stories, our house is 2600 sq ft without the basement room. We heat with geothermal and it is 36000 btu hours and can heat our home without assistance to an outside temperature of 10 degrees. We were going to use a Napoleon 1402 and have one that is brand new. We have pretty much changed our minds to a free standing stove. Any ideas?

 

I am to the point of installing the chimney and plan on going strait into the horizontal pipe but I could go into the top by coming in the wall above the stove, any advantage or disadvantage in a vertical or horizontal installation?

 

The straighter the path for the flue the better the draft. By the way welcome to FHC!

 

I'm no expert, but as they say, the more straight up you go, the better. If you need to shift horizontally, consider doing it with 30*'s or 45*'s instead of 90* if you can. Here's what our intall looks like with paired 30*'s. Drafts like a hurricane.

 

Thanks, pretty stove. I should have 25 feet strait 6 inch chimney with one foot horizontal chimney pipe through a wall thimble them 90 strait down into the stove.

 

Sounds fine. Consider 45's if they fit?

 

I have the IS and love it know several with the PH they feel same way.. I believe burndatwood has 1 of each

 

We are undecided on whether to get the IS or the PH, thinking the IS would be a better choice given our finances and the house being efficient and needing only 40000 BTUS per hour on most winter nights, we like the looks of the PH for sure.

My wife and I plan to go to Woodstock to tour their plant, we are in the process of saving and building lol we have two kids in college but we can do it!

 

I would figure the Ideal Steel and the Progress Hybrid are capable of doing the same work as each other. They each have their own special features, but overall they use the same technology.

Choose whichever looks better to you or fits your budget.

 

Do you like your ideal steel, what do you like best about it?

 

Yes I do. It heats my house very effectively. It is very versatile in how it burns. It is capable of a low end cat burn or give it a little air and get a nice flameshow.

How is your wood supply?

 

We have not got a stove yet but have a cord of oak, we have 2 new areas for storage one of witch will hold 1.6 cord. We figure to be burning next winter.

 

I like the ideal steel but I'm biased because I have one. I think the progressive has a look that might compliment some rooms better but with the price difference and the similar performance I went with the ideal steel.

 

Keep getting that wood put up.

 

Are you planning on heating the whole house from the basement? Are the basement walls insulated?

That oak you have may not be ready yet next year. Keep cutting. Oak normally takes 2-3 years to season properly. Look for dead standing trees, softwood, or lighter hardwoods to get ready for next year.
