So this morning I was up with my 1 month old so wife could get some sleep, watching tv until my older daughter wakes up when I hear something moving in my Christmas tree. I looked at the cat, he was on the other side of the room, looked at the tree and my heart almost stopped. This flying squirrel was in my Christmas tree, I quick brought the baby back in to be with my wife. I chased the squirrel around for a bit and then it promptly went down a furnace duct. Now I don't know how to get it out, anybody have any experience with anything like this?
Just call him out by name, say "Here Rocky, Here Rocky...............Bullwinkle is waiting for you outside" as you stand by the open door.........................
I would try catching the squirrel once it rears it's pesty little head again. Did it go down the return air or supply air side of the furnace ductwork? If it's in the R/A side, you could always take off the filter access door or blower cabinet door on the furnace and place a baited trap in hopes of snapping it. The S/A side would present a bit more difficulty since if the squirrel found its way back to the heat exchanger, well, you know what happens there...
Supply vent.... I duct taped an old pillow case over the opening and banged on the duct from the basement, no luck yet
He can always find his way to another S/A also. Try leaving just one open and blocking the rest for a short while?
And if you're lucky, you may be able to hear it moving along in the pipes/trunkline while in the basement, this will give you it's location.
I don't think so, never heard any noise in the ducts/attic/basement and nothing that looks like a nest or that they are eating ( seed shells pine cones etc.) I shoot all red squirrels I see to prevent this sort of thing, my theory is that he lived in the tree that hit my house yesterday and when it fell he found his way in somehow.
