If Kevin passes on the set I'll buy it from you. It seems everybody in my hometown has a damm 031 and they all drop them off at my dad's house when they have trouble with them!

I'm going over this afternoon after lunch so I will see. He has a lot of parts there so I'm pretty sure we should be able to get a least one going but I REALLY appreciate the offer and may take you up on that.

The 009 saw I fixed for him had a universal electronic ignition module on it and I was wondering about just trying to put that on a known good coil but from what you are saying it would not work because you need the different flywheel?

If that is true we'll check for air leaks, check the coils and such and try to go original. If it still runs the same we'll swap carbs. Just trying to help him out as he has always helped me on different projects over the years. It's nice to be able to return time to him for all the stuff he has taught me over the years. Heck, the guy rebuilt airplanes at his house and did one from scratch!

Good to hear from you NewTostihl. The 090 is still going strong! Hope you all have a great Christmas

Kind of confused as I watched the video provided again and he doesn't show changing the flywheel but uses the stock coil with the new module. Am I missing something?

That's the difference between using a module and swapping the whole system to the newer version. If you use the module, no flywheel swap necessary but you must isolate the problem to the points/condenser in order to assure positive results. Swapping the entire ignition system (say, from lukem's saw...). Would eliminate any question of ignition troubles really.

Just got back but no update. It so nice here(60 degrees, sunshine and no wind) we decided to take more trees down so it won't be till sometime after Christmas when the weather is bad before I go over there. My guess is he'll have it going as we discussed what to do.

Does it have an air box and rear AV bushings? I have a buddy I am helping get an 031 going.

If it's points ignition I say condenser. I had an 031 from CL that the seller said needed a carb. It ran like it had a rev limiter. It would idle all day perfect and run part throttle ok. It would flood out when you gave it full throttle. I replaced the condenser and it ran great.

Yeah, that makes sense now how to take over the function of the points. I think there was still an overriding issue with advance though on the 031 (and another early one's) coil. That's why those early modules all stated that they would not work on the 031 right? Even with the flywheel change, the coil was still "out of step" with what the module was doing? Not sure I'm explaining that right but seems we got into this deeply a few years back.

Yes Boog. The module needs a little extra time to make the spark and that's what retards the spark.

I've always found, if your working on a point ignition 031, stay with it and just fix it right, usually it's just the condenser as mentioned earlier in the thread.......
