I hate splits that are wedges. I split to end up with square splits. B. Oh, cut a small load today. Pin Oak and Hickory.
I split a lot that way, but not with a splitter. I just use an axe or maul. I too love them for the cribbed ends.
I try to do them that way but inevitably it doesn't split straight. It will split straight and then a few inches above the wedge it will start to split to the left or right. I'm thinking of making up an extra wedge that's about 12 inches high and slapping it on my splitter so I can take clean slices, then stack 2 slices at a time to be more efficient
I call 'em "fat shingles" or "thick planks." But if I'm in a time crunch, I go for quarters or halves....
Normal splits from the smaller chunks needing to be split but I do get some square pieces from the larger rounds.
I like wedges, halves and squared pieces. Each serves a purpose in the stacks. I use the squares for cribbing, the wedges to fill in voids, and halves from smaller rounds on the top......
Oh boy here we go you just had to go there.....bark up, bark down ....where's that sign you copied and hung up. I just stack'em and then bark at 'em
I'm always trying to get square 5x5 inch pieces for cribbing. But with tree service wood it can sometimes be near impossible to do that between the trees with twisted grain and ones that have trimmed off knots from 30 years ago that hide inside.
I'm usually trying to move along at a quick pace and don't care what shape it is. Goal is to get it split open and to a manageable size so wife and kids can handle it as well. Always good to have them help move and stack it. And then move and stack it again! LOFL
With the right rounds I try to bust them out like that. Mostly for the fit in the stove, because "Yes I am a t-post user"
