Often folks who never have heated with wood do not understand the value of the wood to someone who does. And if they have the money to make it all disappear pronto, that's awfully tempting rather than waiting for one lonesome hoarder to do it for them. Those 7 trees are more than a weekends worth of work for one guy and a pickup. And it doesn't sound like he's gonna help you hump those rounds into his new pickup either. If you don't have a pickup, what do you use to haul wood?

I'd be annoyed for sure. But bottom line is their trees, their truck, their money, their business. I wouldn't recommend holding a grudge either. Kill 'em with kindness. If they need help and you're able, go for it as long as you aren't making major sacrifices. Being spiteful (even if you are telling yourself you're over it) only hurts you in the long run.

So says the guy in the family with the saws, stove, AND the trucks!  ;)

No, no pickup but my Jeep can haul about 4500 and if I rented or borrowed a dump trailer I could have made pretty quick work of the wood with the help of a buddy. I am definitely not one to procrastinate on anything especially if it was something like this.

I figured you used some kind of tow-behind plan. ;)

If the tree service left the wood already bucked (takes all the fun out of it if you ask me. :saw:) I could see you and a willing buddy getting 7 cords moved in a day with a dump trailer as long as it's a short ride between sites.

Let's not forget this can swing the other way too. It's well known that I'm a wood-burning chainsaw maniac and I get folks asking me all the time if I'll cut their hazard trees down and take the wood, for free of course. Right after I show my proof of insurance and promise to haul all the brush off-site too.:zip:

I say say something along the lines of, "Gee, I would really like to help you but I have to work at getting some wood to keep the house warm for your daughter."

If you're talking about the Trailhawk in your sig that Jeep is probably good for 2K. That's would just about be enough to haul an empty 7K(small) dump. Sounds like you'd have to borrow the FIL's truck to haul the dump. ;) A cord of white ash(green) comes in around 4300lbs according to the online calculators.

Have a brother in law and sister in law that used to buy 6 cord every year. Charged them $900.00 delivered they stacked. Five years back my wife's sister told her they found a deal from a friend of her husband who was starting a firewood business, 6 cord for $450.00. Told my wife just tell Judi (her sister) to make sure it's seasoned. They got 6 face cord seasoned for the money. I won't sell them wood and my wife understands completely knowing I was getting$200.00 a cord delivered back then. Be man enough not to throw it in the wife's face for something someone else did, she is your partner or should be and if not it's time for her to move on as well. Your day will come and without saying a word you can laugh inside.

So wait a second, they went from getting 6 full cord for $150/cord to 2 full cord (6 face cord) for $225/cord?

    • This is straight from the jeep.com site, I have the Trailhawk v6 and if you look at the specs for this vehicle it tows up to 4500 this is not a Honda Pilot it does its job and it does it well. Besides, I wouldn't mind making multiple trips this thing has heated leather seats.

I would be a bit more subtle than that.

I have a Buick LeSabre and I needed to haul some top soil from Lowe's. Of course the boot will only hold so many bags at once and too much makes the front end rather light. Therefore, I made more than one trip.

7 trees in the 24-30" diameter size could be a cord plus per tree depending on the height/spread of the tree. Even with a 4500lb tow rating with a small dump trailer(2k empty) you're only safely moving a half cord of wood per trip. Figure in a dump trailer rental, distance to travel, fuel cost, vehicle wear/tear and time free wood isn't always free.

If it was me I would be bent and my in-laws would know it. I don't own a stupid big diesel truck/trailer/splitters/saws for the fun of it. :)

For your example top soil dumped in your drive from a landscape company may have worked out to be a better choice. ;)

Bet they didn't do it to PYO.
Bet no anger or malice intended from their side.

Mention if they cut any more, you'd like to get a load or 2.

It was just a great score you missed out on.
We understand your side, but have no idea of their side,
Would have been a nice score for you , but it didn't happen.
Use it a a positive learning experience & smile about it :)

Go buy a few cord of logs or rounds so your wife understands the the value,
but never mention the free wood score you could have had.
That's in the past, you can only move forward ;)

After knowing you own a $35k jeep I would say you could foot the bill for a log load. If not I have no advice for ya.

Clearly you are refusing the help I'm trying to provide you so you can put this behind you. :)

Lol whatever, how about I hook both of my Cherokees up to that dump trailer and pull said hypothetical wood, then I'd only have to make half the trips? We can't all have duramax diesels, some of us also have to haul kids. Bottom line is I don't make sh!t up about my beloved Jeeps and I sure as hell don't embellish or mix my words.

I understand what your saying. I see I'm making you upset. I think you have it better than you think. New car doesn't = safe or reliable. There are better options for cars if your living beyond your means. It all depends where your priorities are.
