I need to do a TON of insulation in the attic (there's nothing there now, and it's a big attic). I also want to do the floor between the unfinished basement and the first floor. I HATE working with fiberglass. 1. I was wondering if the rockwool is less irritating to work with? 2. Does the rockwool cost substantially more than the fiberglass?
I have been doing some fiberglass in a basement of a camp and need to also add some in the attic crawl space. And the space is not very big above a cathedral ceiling. I don't even want to go up there but that is where a good amount of heat is being lost. I do not know anything about the rockwool. I did see a newer type of insulation at Lowe's when buying my fiberglass. Took a look at it, but is was only for 2x4 walls (r15) and it was more expensive than the 2x6 (r19) stuff I bought. Forgot the name of it already.
Rockwool requires the same precautions as FG. Is this an attic floor, or is it finished space and you are insulating the roof deck? If its a floor - why not blow in cellulose?
The "attic" is actually a third floor that I'm going to be finishing. The floor of the attic is original 1907 oak boards with about an inch or two of blown in cellulose underneath. I was hoping for something less irritating to work with.
I do want to insulate the roof. Just hate working with fiberglass. Wondering if there was something less irritating I could use.
Yes there is! 3M dow corning foam board insulation. Only problem is it is in sheets like plywood. and you'll have to cut it to fit, so it will be more time consuming. they use it alot in garages and work buildings, Even though it sucks, I would stay with traditional insulation. The foam board works well in roof areas, do you have the room to get it where it needs to go? good luck. www. building.dow.com
Blown in cellulose or if there is room to eventually finish the attic spray foam against the roof deck. Tyvek suit with booties and a hood, rubber gloves and a mask or respirator for the fiberglass.
I added insulation in the attic over the summer. Used un-faced fiberglass rolls. Took the the attic to R-40. Starting to really tell a difference in inside temps. Just had a few fires in the open fireplace so far and it certainly feels warmer and holding heat longer. Can't wait to see the difference when the stove is fired up.
We added r-30 rolls 3 years ago, I believe we are at r-47 now. We noticed a huge difference the 1st Winter
Just finished rolling out another 6" of fiberglass batts in half my attic. Picked a cool day but still boiled with long sleeves and gloves on. If I was starting flesh is blow in cello use instead. Time for a cool shower!
Blown cellulose is mice deterrent is a benefit in itself! I gotta do mine but haven't got around to it yet, cathedral ceiling is holding me back. Some day....
