In 1998 we had one starting on January 4 which lasted about 6 days, so with this stronger El Nino will we have one coming in starting that second week of January. My guess is we'll have one, I just hope it won't be five inches of ice like the one in 98.
I want to like your post for its thoughtfulness, but I just can't because of its content. FU ice storms!!!
We were lucky in 98. The ice started about 10 miles south of us. We were just over the northern edge. I,too, HATE ICE and I have the scars to prove it.........................
My sister was living in Potsdam at that time. I remember the ice pics she emailed home to mom. They were out of power for 3-4 weeks IIRC. The company my BIL worked for at the time took pretty good care of them. Bought them a generator and made it convenient to leave work if need be.
I think our last bad ice storm was 2004, right before Christmas. I still lived with my parents and we lost the electric for 7 days and had to cook the Christmas dinner on the wood stove. Firewood was available everywhere afterwards as so many trees were either fell or were actually uprooted from the weight of the ice on the branches. My favorite memory of that was that the entire parking lot at my high school froze to a 2" solid sheet of ice. Me and some buddies went up there with my truck, some rope, and a car hood. We'd get the truck to about 35mph dragging the hood with 2 guys on it behind about 30ft of rope, pull a U-turn and then at the end of the turn the guys on the sled would let go and be slung-shot at about 50mph the length of the parking lot (maybe 250 yards). I bet we kept that going for 3 hours until we were so cold nobody could hold onto the rope anymore. Just after we left we passed a cop pulling into the school, so I guess we left just in time!!
I've been saying all along we are due. Haven't had a bad one around here since 1977 or 78. Never forget that one for sure.
That ice storm was wicked around here but fate would have it I only lost the power for 20 hours....Good thing too cause I didn't have the wood stove back then....
Gasifier , on December 22 AccuWeather is calling for .56 inches of ice, how many times will it change before that date.
I say it will change twice and we will have at least two ice events this year. Let's hope I'm wrong. Or they aren't significant amounts of Ice. If they stay at 1/2" or less we would be lucky.
Gasifier , I hope this changes. This weather is for the 28 of December, strong winds with over 1/2 inch of ice. thewoodlands . I'm glad I will be home and on vacation! Always great to be home when storms are happening.
Keep your generator ready to go with a few cans of gas with stabilizer mixed with the gas in them. In spring if you still have the gas it will go in the vehicle, wood splitter, chain saw, whatever. It is very likely some of us will experience some long outages due to ice. Good luck to all ... and stay safe and warm st home if or when it happens
I don't remember what year it was ,how many inches of ice we got , but it was bad , was like a different planet , trees crashing down everywhere
We lived about 38 miles north of here when the ice storm of 98 hit, we only lost power for a total of 9 hours but in the town we live in today, most people were without power for a month.
