Looks like a nice truck. I'm selling my 99 F150. It has 116,000 on it. 4WD extended cab. It passed inspection, but it has a leaky gas tank after half full and the core frame has rust. So I'm asking 1500 as is. Runs really smooth. I have a buyer, but am having a mechanic look at it just to make sure there isn't more wrong with it. I don't want to stick anyone with junk.
Gt40 heads, and a different intake/ throttle body on the trucks will wake then up. Big time.. But the trucks are speed density vs mass air so it's a bit different. The truck intake and tb was a bit of a downgrade from the other vehicles that fits made with the old 5.0.
Only thing better is a 5.0 stick. If you get a new compressor make sure younger a new condenser. The black death will kill the new compressor faster. They have a sludge that forms when old compressor goes out and it doesnt really flush out well.
Wow, that's a good deal. My '95 would probably still bring $2k in this neck of the woods. And that is with a small handful of minor problems and some rust. Oh, and 168k or so...
Im surprised that a '96 is SD? Are they non roller cam blocks that late too? '86--'88 Mustangs were SD too and they are commonly converted to mass air. But if doing that requires swapping ECU's (and I think it does), the swap becomes complicated because the trucks (non HO 5.0L) have a different firing order IIRC. He's gonna need the cam out of an HO motor. I bet the GT40 top-end and intake off a mid 90s V8 explorer and a B303 cam would haul the far wood more gooder. Please forgive any inaccuracies as these memories are rather, dusty.
Yeah, I think you're on the right path. I owned a built but still SD 87 5.0 lx mustang, and a 92 mass air lx 5.0 as well. You could program the ECU and not go to MA, and they made more power. Just a little more tuning needed as they wouldn't self tune like MA. You are right about the latter like a 96 truck being MA. We had a couple 96 f150s, one was a 5.0. But never had to work on it. The older 5.0 on a friends f150 was SD. They were all non roller blocks unless HO.
He he...yeah, I could build a 347 stroker motor for it too but the truck is really not worth it IMO. It probably doesn't see but 1-2K miles per year, mostly haulin crap (mainly firewood!) And I don't really have the time or the "want to" to put into it. I'll prolly just sell it here this next year or so, my buddy has a car lot in Tennessee and I'll likely just have him find me a rust free older F250 SD 4x4 w/ ext cab, short bed and a 5.4 V8
331 would last longer due to less extreme rod angles but .... I'd take the V10 over the 5.4 in a truck that moves 2k miles a year. Could prolly load it up and tie on a trailer then.
Hey going from a 5.0 to a 5.4 would be like going to a big block for me! My lil dumper trailer is only a 6 x 10 so... I also have a 96 F250 with a 460 but I think I'm gonna send that one down the road too. That truck sure does sound cool! My nephew wants it just cause of the way it sounds Also have a 99 F350 with a PSD...man, I really need to sell some crap! Yeah, I could do a V10. Dad Has a '99 model that has over 350k on it...never been open! Are we still on topic?!
Nice work truck there Butcher. A good find. I have owned several Fords over the years. Older models and fairly newer models. Been happy with them all.
Your hauler looks good butcher. Over the last three months, I was beating myself up looking for a truck with less than 80K on it. For whatever reasons, I just can't get used to the idea of buying a vehicle with way over 125K on 'em. But, just as others have said, this one would have been a little more difficult to walk away from. I had a 78 with the same engine and it also was gutless for power. I would have thought that it would have been addressed by 96!
I enjoyed one of the ones I had that had the 5.4 Liter Triton V8. Seemed to be a good motor, but I only had it a few years.
The 5.4 is a good motor. Just depends on the model. They like to keep their plugs in , read stuck. Or eject plugs. Or timing chain issues, intake, cam phasers.
