13 hens and a rooster... They had me down to an egg or two a day,,,, molting,,, now they're coming out of the molt we're up to 6-8 eggs and climbing... Being so cold out they'll get some warm oatmeal, honey from the farm and some flax oil today... Funny , they all get that low tone of chatter talk while they're eating something they love... almost sound like dove or pigeon coo's.

They'll be fighting over the heat lamp.

Ever give thought to one of those camp woodstoves for the ladies when it's this cold? Firebox on those is rather small though.

Heat lamp is like 3 feet from the floor hanging straight down... I really don't want to heat them as they will not tolerate the cold , then become sick.. If you heat then in the winter they will never move from from the heat source... They have a nice big 10x12 coop, they are in the Southern sun and have plenty of roosting space... Not overcrowded... Main thing is they are out of the wind, which they are... I'll open a small back door today so they can come out if they want... They roost on a long 2 x4 laid flat.. That way when they sit they can cover their feet with their chest feathers...

I think that's key...that their feet aren't so cold. I think about dogs and cats out in this.

Rough winter in the NE & Mid W.
Any low temperature records being broken

Amazing the difference, youns need the "big stove"
& I'm running at an idle & it's hot inside.
30 here this morning, light snow, house 74 running on low

Last map I saw said we're supposed to get 12-16 inches followed by a couple nights of double digit negatives...high Monday won't get above 0. I'm not sure what the record is, but this has to be close.

My memory might not be real accurate, but I remember
    snow & cold in the 60s & 70s. I remember
deer season had snow & cold. Sub zero a few times.

Seems to me it's a weather cycle that has been here before.
Maybe winter cycle is coming back to the Mid West & North East
for a few decades to come.

Watch the size of local wood-burner's wood stacks,
big growing stacks mean long cold winter ;)

If that's true and someone saw my wood pile they'd think Armageddon was knocking on the door.,

Gonna be hard to break the snow &/or cold record by much.
Have a history of some super cold temps there.

Bring in the good, big wood.

    Hope no one loses power.

My cat and three dogs use a doggie door... I get to see what they want... They like the woodstoves! Feel sorry for any dogs out in this weather.... Even my 1 year old jack russell who loves to be out chasing rabbits for an hour or so has been out for 10 minutes and then wants back in , if he's hanging out with me...

I'm convinced on the "epa cat stoves" are tops.
They can crank out heat when needed much better than I thought
& get you thru the night no problem.
