I'd welcome any and all feedback on my round filing. This is on an FG2 filing at 30° and 5° down for firewood. Just wondering how I'm doing. I hit the gullets first then sharpen. They seem to cut nicely but tend to dull quickly in the hardwood (mostly dirty blow down).
    Thanks in advance! Be kind...:D

Looks great to me . The reason it's dulling quick isn't your filing . I've found LPX/LGX doesn't like dirty wood . Try locating some semichisel for the nasty stuff .

Thanks, and I agree about the dirty wood. Just trying to get these chains used up before getting some more. Lately I've been seeing dirt under the bark from these relentless black ants and winds/rain we have up here.
Picture a dead standing oak, pull off some bark about four or five feet up and seeing dirt caked on. Wouldn't have believed someone if they told me.

Those are semi chisel chains? Look like it to me. If so they look like a good work angle. If there dulling quickly I'd say its the dirt.

Yeah pretty sure they're semi chisel, just agreeing with the dirt part. From the angle of the pic the corner looks square but the next tooth and the depth gauge ID them, correct? I'm no chain guru, and these are old ones that my dad gave up on.

When they'd get dull he'd go buy a couple more, he never cared a lick about filing chains. I've got a box full, most are 50%+. Good practice for me anyway and they were free. Plus they're all the same, .325 .050 72dl for the husky.

Looks like a good edge for what your cutting. What do you mean by 5° down? I tend to have the file a little lower in the gullet but it will dull quicker.

Yep they look like semi chisel to me too. They look good to me and as far as dulling if you have a lot of dirt there really is not anything more you can do. Just keep the file handy.

Man ! I need glasses ! I just looked at the cutter in the first pic originally ,and assumed LPX . Definately semichisel . Should have looked at the second cutter and second picture . Still, nice looking filing !
Just did a lightning killed oak . Was using chisel ,as It looked clean . Started bucking ,and got black dirt and a very dull chain . On went the semi ,and out came some choice words about carpentar ants .

Just the way my pea brain remembers how to set the angle lol.
I mean 5° upward tilt into the tooth, if that makes sense? That was a recommendation from a guy with much more chain smarts than myself.
