Stargazer, the does are more tender so who wants a buck? I hunt because I like to dine on venison. I can get all of the fowl, beef, pork and lamb that I want at any grocery store.

I would shoot a doe happily if it was legal. No doe tags in the whole U.P.
I'm not a trophy hunter by any means, just trying to fill the freezer, it's been getting harder as the wolf population increases the dnr makes it tougher to take your deer due to shrinking deer herds. That's a cool pic though and I'm glad that there are deer somewhere:yes:

Yeah, poured floor and block walls. It's also unheated and to get to it you have to go through my mud room which has an exterior door on it

Thought about doing an L shaped block wall in my basement have a sealed masonry room down there for wood storage. Basically an old coal room. Anyone done this?

In that case you don't have to worry about termites so much, they can't eat cement or block! I personally would load it with a seasons worth of wood just prior to the season (late Nov....), and burn away. Any leftover at end of season would be moved back outside...

I'd love that. My grandmother lived outside of Pittsburgh in an old house that had a coal room in the basement with a shoot to outside near the road. A coal truck could drive up, shovel coal into shoot and it slid into the coal room.... That would be an awesome wood setup.....

Have thought about it before. I have large basement windows. One corner blocked in would be a bug proof firewood storage. Although if you just season your wood properly i have found the worst bugs you run into is spiders. Carpenter ants and termites dont care to much for dried out splits. And the spiders you bring in will eat the strays. Team effort respect your spiders haha

    Yep
Shoveled lots of coal into a coal shoot
Grew up in WV & Pittsburgh area

"Coal shoot" / "wood chute" is a good idea for a basement

Been filling my basement like this for over twenty years. Six rows deep, fourteen feet long and piled into the floor trusses.
Only a few small harmless spiders come in and any left over stays down there for the summer. No mould, but there's a heating duct right overtop of the pile aiming down.

Green wood will create very bad moisture issues in your home. A cord of green hardwood has around 120 gallons or 1000 pounds of water in it! (seasoned to 20%mc) Of course members here understand that and ……hoarding begins.

Yep. Before I installed my stove and had a fireplace, I used to store a cord of green wood in my woodshed which had no vents... I'd open it up after a few months and there was moister dripping from the ceiling and mold everywhere. But now that I season my wood 3 or lore years I don't have that issue anymore....

As said before seasoned wood in the basement has not been a problem here either. I keep over a cord in the coal room with the stove.

The old coal door works great for putting wood in.

I never see any ants but I do feed them year round.

My stove is in the basement so I keep wood in the basement. I also leave my dehumidifier hooked up year round and it kicks on if it needs to. Sometimes I turn it so it blows on the wood.

What a contrast! I run 2 oversized humidifiers 9 months out of the year because our air is too dry.

Try keeping fish in fish tanks. I never lack moisture in my home.
