Yep...don't cook on the stove but share all your other sentiments.

My reasons have morphed a bit from the beginning just a couple years ago.

    Originally I did it because:
    1) My wife liked the idea
    2) Reminded me of good childhood memories
    3) Save money.

Those still apply but I found out that I also:

    1) Enjoy getting out with the dogs on our wood runs
    2) The exercise it gives me
    3) having a stressful job I like the ability to do something constructive that is simple to do but gives great rewards.

Oh and playing with power tools and sharp pointy things is big bonus too

I agree with all this. Like cutting wood myself.

When I was a child (no, I did not have a dinosaur for a pet) I always found that I had some of my best days in the woods. Soon I was taking a hatchet with me but then graduated to an axe. Fun! I have never lost that great feeling of just being in the woods, rather working or playing or just relaxing.

Being born into a poor family, we naturally heated with wood. Mother even cooked on a wood stove and that also is how we got hot water. At a very young age I began joining in on all parts of the wood burning thing. Emptying ashes was my first chore then filling the back porch daily. I then taught myself how to split wood. I had to do it alone because I was the runt of the family (had polio in my youth) and they didn't think I could do much. I showed them. Even learned how to use that one man crosscut saw.

Today I still get much enjoyment from cutting but do find it is getting a bit harder every year. But that still does not distract from the enjoyment. Many times I work alone but really enjoy when my wife helps. We are both getting up in age a bit but both of us plan on doing this as long as we possibly can.

Started out to save money over pellets..

    $3,600 a yr in LP
$900-1,000 the 3.5 yrs I burned pellets only.
Now I spend less than $600 a year in pellets, so you would think I saved money by switching to wood also??? Wrong.

My CAD has me spending thou$and$ a year on chainsaws and related equipment. Having said that, I am expecting a Husq 550xp in the mail (UPS) any minute now :)

I prob spend the same amount now as I did when burning LP (Ummm, CAD?)But by heating my home on my own, it keeps me outside, keeps me busy, my home is MUCH Warmer, and it builds character.

Makes me feel accomplished when I C/S/S a bunch of wood and know that it gonna provide my family with a warm home.

So I did it to save money, but now, I do it because of the feeling I get.

Did I mention I have CAD an love to run Chainsaws?
(I know, No chaps. This was on Vacation at the Cabin in Pa and I forgot them :zip:)

Pics. Because we all love pics

November 09 was my last LP fill. Still around 35%. Only use it for cooking. No LP furnace is 6 years.

I pay a $99 a year "No usage" fee and a $20 a year rental fee for our tank outside. Once this 35% is gone, I am getting 2 small cylinders (100 lb tanks) and just gonna use them.

The gas company at my office charges me $35 a month + tax for a fuel delivery charge which is basically a charge for the right to have gas service. I use less than $50 gas a year.

Last year we didn't use enough natural gas so they said there is a $100 month service ( penalty fee. ) I went down and said no way am I paying that no ifs ands or buts folks! I walked out for a one time payment of $50 and left a very pizzed off manager in my very pizzed off wake....  We haven't got a single penalty bill this year.

Ours is $100 a year. I would never pay $100 a month! How can they do that?

$100 a year is reasonable. But $1,200 a year? That's a little odd. I would be switching companies.

Unfortunately I can't switch companies we are locked in to ours by location and the Villiage gas lines. We pay a lot
for NG A LOT when we use it so we don't as much as possible. We hit $400 to $500 if we rely only on NG in the 3 coldest months and well over $250 the 2 second coldest months. It ain't cheap! The issue we have is our NG provider is a major con artist at every turn..... They tried that same thing on my neighbor and he paid just to find out it was not a required fee so when he complained they said sure we will refund it and he still over a year later has not seen a dime. They don't tell you it's a voluntary fee they just bill it with an explanation that you didn't use enough gas.

We had the gas company show up at the door last year with a new gas meter in hand because they were sure ours had broken. Were going to charge us for it and everything. I pointed out the new chimney.

It's been 3 1/2 years since the oil truck showed up in my driveway. It's sitting right around half full, as it was last season and the year before. I ran the furnace once this season to make sure it would work if needed, and ran it twice last season, once for a test run and another time just to take the chill out of the house when it was 50 outside.

Which reminds me. I should probably add some fuel treatment to the tank. There may be a biology experiment starting to grow in there for all I know.
