I'm replacing my door gasket. The stove store sold me s tube of Rutland cement. Upon pulling the old gasket I find it was held in with silicon.

    So which is better?

Got the old silicon out. 2 hours and 2 Dremel wire wheels later. It took me a while to figure out the Dremel trick. I was getting nowhere with a razor blade and nail polish remover.

I'm going to try the Rutland cement.

Cement went on real easy. Waiting for it to dry for an hour then it will be curing fire. I'm glad that I have a pile of clamps for holding the corners and angles. It think it would have sucked getting the rope into place without them.

The good news about using the cement is that it cleans off pretty easily next time you replace....

I have always wondered the same thing but always used cement. The only issue I see with cement is if you get the gasket too wet with cement it tends to get hard where silicone would not.

I agree, but this seems to be the case more with the straight liquid type Sodium Silicate... Highly absorbing.

They used silicone on the Buck so that's what I went with. Got some copper gasket silicone from the auto parts store. To remove the old silicone I used an angle grinder with a cable-twist wire brush wheel, which went pretty quick.

How long on average do you figure before the old gasket begins to leak assuming the stove runs 24x7 for 4-5 months a year?

Bob, we were just talking about this earlier today and I told the other party that the stove we had before the Fireview went 16 years before we had to replace the door gasket. We are now on our 9th burning season with the Fireview and it is going well. No change yet.

Same here. I still have that stove and look forward to building a workshop so I can use it in there. The doors had a groove where you could put a gasket in but that groove fit around a lip on the stove than once the door would closed, it completed the "seal". I first thought it would leak or force combustion, but neither of those concerns were warranted. Operated just fine!
Spoke with a guy two weeks ago and he said someone stopped by his house and told him he needs a gasket in his stove. (Same kind) I told him that isn't true, they are designed that way but he had the gasket installed anyway.."Man, does that door fit tighter now!"...go figure.

I'm using gasket, but without cement or silicone to hold it in place. Have been fighting a small smoke leak for about a month and only a week ago determined it was caused by the door having a slight inward bow on the bottom. Needed to stretch the gasket at the bottom and bunch it up on the sides and top to stop the leak. New door arrives tomorrow and gets installed Saturday.

Yep, still in my trial period and can send it back until Dec 31st if I don't like it. I'm going to create a thread with my early observations in a day or so; will provide all the details then.
