The tree trimmers cut these down in front of my neighbors house, Red & white Pine, and a little Spruce. He didn't want them so guess who got em. Couldn't get the biggest tree rounds home yet. Too heavy for me alone to lift. I'll get them later, only about ten pieces. Also, my other neighbor gave me five standing dead cherries. That's another day.
Nice score and great pictures! Ive never heard of Red pine before, interesting. That last pictures shows some pretty wild rot in a few of those rounds. Were any of those trees standing dead? If so it would be interesting to stick em with a moisture meter. I sure would like some cherry as well. Sounds like you have some work ahead of you. Nice neighbors.
Everyone knows that burning pine will burn down your house. You should be burning oak that was still standing a month ago.
Dennis, I was able to grab the roofing and put it on the stacks last weekend. I'll get some pics soon. Sure is easier than messing around with tarps! Although, I still need to use a few of those to cover the rest.
3/4 load of nothing but nice, dry pine this am. It's 32 outside, and 74 on the thermostat. (Thermostat is in next room over) it's warm, it burns, I'm happy.
Thanks Sean trktrd! I designed and had it built as a garage conversion. It's sitting smack-dab where the middle of my 16' garage door used to be. A lot of credit goes to my friends here on FHC that gave me lots of great advice this year.
Sean, red pine is very common around these parts and is a fairly fast growing tree. Perhaps not as common as white pine but still very common.
So which has higher btus? I guess it may not matter for those of you who have access to the good stuff so theres no need to split hairs. Around here in what I affectionately call 'softwood land' we know that spruce is worse in btus than ponderosa pine and lodgepole pine is best of the pines (in our area) and larch is the best coniferous available to us and almost anywhere.
Just to clarify, there's nothing wrong at all with burning pine, or any other wood for that matter. I think some people might have taken my comment the wrong way. It was an attempt at humour, nothing more. Hell, I'd burn cow dung if that's all that was available.
