Thought I'd bump this thread with an update.
Was at tractor supply today and was looking for a product called Plasti dip.
My Idea was to coat the finger tips of my stove gloves before I wear yet another hole in the right middle finger.
I didn't see it, but i did find a product called Tear Mender
    upload_2015-11-30_20-43-11.jpeg
I gave each finger tip a light coat and let it dry. (5 minutes)
    It dries clear and flexible.
Also thought about taking an old glove and cutting little patches out of it and gluing them to the fingers tips of a good glove to reinforce them.

Right middle finger had a little hole starting in the leather

I'll use them for a while and see how the coating holds up.
If this doesn't work I'll try the Plasti dip on a new pair to see if it keeps them from wearing out so quick

Well, it's been one day, and the small hole in the right middle finger is still sealed up...

    Will do, Dennis :handshake:

Actually I'm cautiously optimistic about this fix. It's very thin and flexible. We'll see how long it lasts. I may give it another thin layer to see if it helps

I have the fix for that: put the wounded finger between a piece of wood and the buck- block on a wood splitter. Then push the ram forward. Stop sometime after you hear someone in the neighborhood screaming (it will be you but you will not notice it is you right away). Remove hand from splitter and wait about 2 weeks for entire nail to fall off. You do not have to wait at all for easing the pain of the slinter under the nail though- you will forget about that entirely w/in about 0.000001 seconds after the ram sets your finger into the buck block spikes.

I cannot tell how the story ends yet, new nail only about 1/2 down the fingers' quick and it has been a couple of months.

Back on topic: I have to wear gloves while doing almost everything because brushing anything beyond a feather duster up against the exposed (Easy Boys!) quick is a new experience in feeling. Not always pain but always a real wake- up note. You cannot believe how sensitive that skin surface is.... probably why it wears a nail in the first place.

Oh yes, I do know how sensitive it is, I had two fingers at the same time with no fingernails because they were smashed so badly the doctor said the nails would not grow back right, so he pulled them off

I'm a lefty though when I had my left arm broken I had to learn to write and do things with my right hand. By the time the cast came off, you could almost read what I wrote right handed! :D

As for the gloves, the only time I use any is when I'm cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood. I don't use gloves when handling firewood in the house or feeding the wood stove. The gloves I use for CSS usually end up with holes in all the fingers and both thumbs on both hands. I also split by hand which accounts for the excessive wear.

I still have several "left" hand gloves that someone can have. I believe I have 3 of them?

Yeah, so do the rest of us! ;) What we need is a bunch of left handers we can swap gloves with!

And therein lies the problem; only something like 9% of the US population is left, or 'wrong' handed. So no matter how big a bunch of them you find, there will always be a much bigger bunch of right- handers around them. This varies by country though, fairly high rate of left- handedness in Canada, almost non- existent in Japan.

Some claim left- handed people are more intelligent. Data suggests they have a higher rate of alcoholism. Now that right there is an interesting and ironic combination, at least in my opinion'. :D

Ok its been five weeks since I started this test with the Tear Mender coating on the fingers of the stove gloves.
I wanted to see if I could extend the wear time and the short answer is...
    Yes, It Worked
About three weeks in I gave the finger tips of the gloves another coating of the Tear Mender and last week I coated the right index finger along the side as it was showing some wear. Seems now maybe it will be the inside that wears out instead off the outside.
The Tear mender is a very thin milky consistency and goes on very easy. It dries in just a few minutes and is clear and shiny when dry. It is just a little bit tacky just after it dries and as soon as your start to use them it turns sort of a milky grey and the tack goes away. They are still super flexible. So far none of the patches have begun to show any wear or cracking. I think now I am going to coat some of my work gloves and test them. KIMG0027.jpg

These are very thin leather gloves similar to what I wear for work and cutting
I have a pair that are fairly new that I will coat and test to see how long they last. I have the same problem with wearing out the middle finger, index finger and then the thumb.

I also use Mechanix Wear gloves from AutoZone. I think a test is in order there also

Here is the start of my glove test

Gave the thin leather work gloves a coat of the Tear Mender yesterday
    KIMG0084.jpg
Went on nice and thin, dried quick and looked good.

Headed out to work and they were just a tiny bit sticky just like I expected. After a couple minutes the sticky went away and they turned to the milky grey.
    KIMG0088.jpg
I used them for a few hours yesterday and all day today. Apparently this leather is a little too smooth for the glue to stick. The coating has almost completely wrinkled and peeled off. I'm not giving up though, I'll try it again
