20-30 F below is nuts, the record low for the region of England I live in is about -18*C (about 0 F I think) and we have temperature records dating back to the 1730s in places, a more typical coldest night of the year for me would be -8*C (about 18 F)!!
Hi, yes there was a crappy gas fire in here when we moved in, I opened it up for the stove last summer. 90% of wood burners are in fire places like this over here as most houses were built with fire places. We've had the stove 2 years and I reckon it was in the pub I got it from for about 5-7 years before that. Cat Stove? You got me there, i haven't got a Scooby what one of those is? (Insert lame joke about burning cats here)..
That sounds so nice! Year before last we had a tough time-- had what they were calling a "polar vortex" come and squat on the midwest. It was -35 for almost two weeks here. We went through a lot of wood that January!
Well see I live close enough to Canadian border.. Wife is dual citizen.... Fahrenheit or Celsius translations are second nature but they meet at 40 below and that just cold I've seen it a few times more than I want to remember
Are you old enough to remember the days before they invented 'wind chill'? Growing up all we had was a thermometer to tell us the air temp. I guess it wasn't colder if the wind was blowing back then
I seem to remember a different term used to describe "wind chill" back in the day, but I can't remember. Yeah, we always knew you'd freeze faster in a gooder wind, but I guess we weren't smart enough to give it a name.
Mirkwood Jim you're bumping along nicely on your big intro thread here! Nice hoarding stash at the top of these 3 pages Reaching out across the Big Drink is great- helps us cousins remember the Old Country has wood heatin hoarders too
Hi Brad, mainly subtle differences I guess but I can certainly see some between us (there was a recent face book post from an American chap who'd just holidayed in the UK that went viral that summed up many of these, worth looking out for). It's very cool for me to see these cultural differences too!
Welcome to FHC Mirkwood Jim ... glad you decided to join us. Have really enjoyed all of your posts...
I'm on a rocket stove forum with quiet a few of your fellow countrymen and an absolute ton of other Europeans. Lots of neat cultural differences and still, similarities
Thanks Eric, I had waited until I had time before I posted as I had anticipated lots of friendly greetings from you guys that I wanted to be able to acknowledge, I broke a finger yesterday so I've taken it easy this evening and had a bit more sofa time than I would have otherwise. Plenty of wood burners over here (too many competing for too little wood) but most folks tend to buy "seasoned" logs in.
While we are duscussing differences.. Jim... convince the stores on this side of the pond the brilliance of duvet covers... tired of shipping them in..
Welcome to the forum Jim. Nice to see folks from other nations joining in. Looks like a nice wood pile and a good helper with small saw to go along with it and you. On the cat stove, we have one and absolutely love it. We were sort of afraid to buy one at first because we had heard some bad things about them. It turned out to be either BS or camel turds. It is a wonderful stove and it cut our wood usage by more than 50% while keeping the house a whole lot warmer. btw, my wife's relatives came from your country to our country many, many moons ago.
Thank you Stinny, very kind of you to say so. Ps how do I tag people rather than repeat their whole message? Thanks in advance
@ then their name, a popup of usernames shows up, grab the one u want. It won't change color til after u post...
I certainly remember the times before "wind chill." I thought it crazy then and have not changed my mind. I also remember the days of zones for cities and no zip codes anywhere. Just a couple more of the changes I've seen in my short life.
