These four dead Ironwood have been down 2 to 4 years, they're inside drying out. The pictures that have just the two rounds standing are from the top & bottom. I also had some near the house which I split and stacked.
I get a fair amount of that too (we call it 'hop hornbeam' or just hornbeam). They get up to 4-5" in diameter and then just die and fall over. I search for them because it is excellent firewood.
That gonna be your "go to / overnight wood " when it gets to be really winter ? betting the 2-4 year stuff is pretty dry , dry enough to burn anyway
That's the only ironwood I find too. Smaller stuff, that dies. It is very similar to shagbark hickory when young, so I'm sure I've got more of that than I think. Shag/ ironwood, eh either way it's heavy and awesome firewood.
I picked the three that I thought had the most moisture in them, they're inside again so I'll take another reading tomorrow afternoon. I still think these will be ready by the first Sunday of December.
How close to the stove will you put them? Good MC standing dead, I'm interested in seeing if your right by sunday........
The rack they're stacked in is a good 20 feet from the stove, the splits in the picture are about two feet away from the stove.
Good habit. I like to put a few pieces right next to the indoor furnace for a day or two, just to catch a few percent of the residual moisture. A little heat and air movement does a world of good. Going to place some bets on this, over and unders?
Wow. That stack would look a lot better on our place. I'd even let the ornery one stack it....I think. At least I might let her try...if she made some more cookies. But Zap, just to let you know, I'm now eating cinnamon rolls! Sure is nice being married to a good baker.
